CMPC Received A Giant Pulp Washer Last Week. The Equipment Arrived At Its Guaíba Unit, Near Porto Alegre, And Weighs 300 Tons.

The CMPC, a pioneer in paper and pulp production in Chile, will complete its megaproject BioCMPC this year, making its industrial plant in Guaíba, located 30 km from Porto Alegre (RS), one of the most sustainable in the industry worldwide. One of the company’s largest purchases, the first unit of the world’s largest pulp washing press, arrived last week at the facility.

How Does The New Pulp Washer From CMPC Work?

The purpose of the pulp washer, which weighs over 300 tons, is to efficiently improve the handling of pulp, reducing the use of chemicals in the process called bleaching. The press model is the TwinRoll Press Forward 2288, from Valmet, a multinational company founded in Finland.

The multinational considers the delivery of the equipment in Porto Alegre a significant milestone in global engineering, developed over four years. Following the first piece of equipment, the Chilean company awaits a second similar unit, scheduled to arrive in June. The installation of both units will also enable an 18% increase in the factory’s pulp production.

The Swedish unit of Valmet, located in Sundsvall, usually uses special heavy-load vehicles to transport equipment to Gothenburg and then ship it. However, this was not possible with the pulp washer.

The only option was to charter a ship for direct transport from Sundsvall to Guaíba, near Porto Alegre. On Valmet’s website, the logistics, energy, and pulp project leader, Jenny Sjöberg, states that the company had never produced a pulp washer this large.

Equipment Is Part Of CMPC’s Billion-Dollar Investments

According to the general director of CMPC in Brazil, Maurício Harger, the arrival of this new equipment in Porto Alegre was celebrated. This initiative was carried out with a focus on making the pulp factory even more sustainable and with an even smaller impact on the environment.

Although the exact value of the giant pulp washer has not been disclosed, CMPC states that the equipment is part of a BRL 2.75 billion investment in the BioCMPC project. Thus, there is no specific value discrimination for the press.

The factory located in Guaíba produces about 2 million tons of pulp annually. The raw material, which has seen significant growth in demand due to being biodegradable, is used in the manufacture of personal hygiene products and packaging, among other items.

The unit employs 6,600 professionals in its forestry, port, and industrial operations. It is worth noting that CMPC has been in Brazil since 2009, and its operations are based on the concept of a circular economy, transforming all solid waste from the industrial process into 13 new products from cement and wood panels to soil pH correctors and organic fertilizers.

Learn More About The BioCMPC Project

The CMPC Group began construction of the factory in Guaíba in December 2021, and at that time, the project included modernization and new environmental control and management measures. The investment made by the company, of BRL 2.75 billion, is the largest sustainability investment in the state’s history, according to information from Maurício Harger.

With the project, the group aims to improve its environmental performance by increasing renewable energy generation, optimizing water use, reducing gas emissions, among other initiatives. Another essential aspect of the project is the creation of job opportunities for the community during and at the end of the construction work.
