Vessel Operating at EuroChem Terminal in Russia Suffered Two Consecutive Explosions During Loading, Began to Sink and Leaked Ammonia into the Water
The LPG tanker Eco Wizard, registered under the flag of the Marshall Islands, had an accident yesterday at the port of Ust-Luga, in the Leningrad region, Russia, near the border with Estonia. According to information from the Russian Ministry of Transport and local media, the vessel was hit by two explosions in the engine room, about 10 minutes apart, during ammonia loading operations at EuroChem’s terminal.
The explosions caused significant damage to the hull, leading to water ingress into the vessel and causing list to port side. As a result, part of the ammonia stored in the tanks began to leak into the sea, prompting the immediate activation of emergency response teams.

Context and History of Similar Incidents
The vessel had arrived at Ust-Luga from Belgium. The Eco Wizard was built in 2024 and has a typical profile of vessels that make up the so-called “shadow fleet” of Russia, used for transporting sensitive cargo — such as oil and chemicals — circumventing sanctions imposed by Western countries.
According to the consulting firm Vanguard Tech, this is the sixth incident involving explosions on tankers linked to this fleet in 2025. Here are some of them:
