Rare Test Photo Reveals Elon Musk’s Early Aptitude for Technology and Touches the Billionaire’s Mother’s Heart

A simple post on X last Sunday brought to light an unusual document from Elon Musk’s youth. The revelation was made by his mother, Maye Musk. Proudly, she shared an old photo of an aptitude test taken by her son when he was just 17 years old.

The test, conducted in 1989 at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, shows that Elon Musk received a perfect score — A+ — in both programming and computer operation. In the caption of the post, Maye wrote: “My Amazing Son. A Proud Mother“. The image quickly went viral.

Musk himself responded to his mother’s post with a comment very much in his style. “I was told I had the highest engineering aptitude score they had ever seen. In other words, not bad for a human, as a future AI would say.”

The viral document impresses not only for the result but for the context. At the time of the test, Musk was still far from founding companies like Tesla, SpaceX, or X. However, the early talent he demonstrated already indicated a promising future in the field of technology.

Despite his fortune estimated at over US$ 421 billion currently, according to Forbes magazine, Elon Musk’s childhood was marked by difficulties.

Maye Musk recalls that after the divorce in 1979, she raised her children with few resources. “I remember Elon saying: ‘I wanted Coco Pops, but we only had Raisin’ Bran‘”, she said in an interview with Fox News.

Even today, when visiting her son at the places where he works, such as the SpaceX launch center in Texas, Maye states that simplicity remains. “You can’t have a luxury home near a rocket launch site,” she asserted.

Meanwhile, Musk continues to be in the spotlight, whether for his artificial intelligence projects or for debates surrounding his leadership at Tesla, which is facing increasing questioning from investors.
