After facts revealed in the Lava Jato operation removed Golar Power from the competition for Petrobras’ Liquefied Natural Gas terminal in Bahia, Golar LNG and Norsk Hydro announced yesterday (10/12) that they have mutually agreed to terminate a memorandum of understanding from July for Hydro to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Alunorte’s aluminum refinery in Brazil.

The termination will not change Golar’s plans to build a LNG import terminal in Barcarena, in the North region, with construction expected to start soon. Golar bets on super-cooled gas as a substitute for diesel, fuel oil, and LPG in Brazil.

“Hydro is committed to seeking natural gas as an energy source for Alunorte’s refinery and will continue discussions with stakeholders,” the company said in a statement.

Hygo Energy Transition Ltd is a joint venture between Golar LNG and the U.S. private equity firm Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners. It aims to expand the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Brazil and appointed Paul Hanrahan as CEO after his predecessor, Eduardo Antonello, left the position after being named in Lava Jato investigations.

Golar Power was Authorized by the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Brazil to Import Up to 20 Million m3/d of LNG Through the Regasification Terminal in Bahia

Golar Power, a joint venture between Norwegian Golar LNG and U.S. private equity firm Stonepeak, was the only company to submit a bid to the state-owned Petrobras to lease the terminal.

The company already imports LNG to Brazil through its regasification terminal in the neighboring state of Sergipe, where it also operates the 1.5 GW Porto de Sergipe power plant.
