MSC Orion Launches Direct Route Between Bahia and Asia, Expanding Trade Connections and Strengthening Tecon Salvador, Marking a New Chapter in Maritime Trade.
The Brazilian maritime sector witnessed a significant milestone with the arrival of the Super Ship MSC Orion at Tecon Salvador. With a length of 366 meters and a draft of 16 meters, the MSC Orion, capable of carrying 15,000 containers, inaugurated a new regular route connecting Bahia directly to Asia. This operation, carried out by Wilson Sons, represents an important advance in Brazilian foreign trade, strengthening the connection of the North and Northeast regions of the country with the Far East.
First Navigation and Operation of the MSC Super Ship
The MSC Orion is the first ship of this class to navigate the waters of Baía de Todos-os-Santos.
The initial operation required the movement of 700 containers, marking the beginning of a service that promises weekly departures.

MBRF surprises the logistics sector by demonstrating how Artificial Intelligence can directly influence deliveries throughout Brazil by reorganizing distribution routes in seconds, optimizing fleet usage, reducing logistics costs, and speeding up product arrivals even in the face of unforeseen road incidents.
MSC, the ship’s owner, emphasized that this initiative demonstrates its commitment to increasing transport capacity and the growth of Brazilian foreign trade.
The new service offers a direct route to Asia, which not only facilitates relations with China but also broadens connections with other markets in the Far East.
This new maritime route is especially advantageous for the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, enabling a more efficient connection to these areas.
Additionally, the Central-West and Southeast states will find alternatives for the existing logistical bottlenecks in the current supply chain.
Benefits of the Super Ship and the New Route for Exports and Imports
Among the main segments of exports that will benefit from this new direct line are Bahian cotton, meat, fruits, pulp, chemicals, and petrochemicals.
In imports, the new route will allow products such as renewable energy, chemicals and petrochemicals, automobiles, fertilizers, and electronics to become more competitive in the Brazilian market.
Tecon Salvador, with its new capacity to accommodate super ships, emerges as a strong competitor to the traditional ports of Santos, Rio de Janeiro, and Paranaguá.
This expansion places Salvador in a prominent position in the national port scenario, increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of Brazilian foreign trade.
Recognition and Investments by MSC
MSC expressed pride in offering the national market a service that connects directly to Asia from the Brazilian Northeast.
The company highlighted that the launch of this route reinforces its commitment to promoting the growth of Brazil’s foreign trade and values the potential of the Northeast Region.
In 2018, the Port of Salvador received authorization from the Bahian Port Authority to operate ships up to 366 meters in length.
This anticipation of global changes demonstrated a strategic vision to improve the operational efficiency of Brazilian terminals and meet the growing demand for higher transport capacities.
According to Demir Lourenço, Executive Director of Tecon Salvador, the terminal was recently classified as the 6th best in the world in the category of up to 500,000 TEUs, based on a survey by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
This recognition reflects efficiency in service and positions Salvador as an important hub for various industrial segments and producers.
Since the beginning of investments in 2000, Wilson Sons has already invested over R$ 1 billion in the terminal.
These investments included the duplication of the quay, increasing the draft depth to 16 meters, expanding the storage area, adopting new technologies, and acquiring modern machinery.
The focus was also on training operational teams to ensure the maintenance of routes and attract new ones, such as the newly established connection with Asia.
The Importance of the New Ship for Brazilian Trade
The arrival of the Super Ship MSC Orion and the inauguration of the new Bahia-Asia route are significant steps for Brazilian foreign trade.
Tecon Salvador, now capable of receiving large vessels, demonstrates its ability to adapt to global demands and offers new opportunities for exporters and importers.
With continuous investments and a forward-looking vision, Salvador positions itself as a key player in international maritime trade.
