The New Corolla Appears With Electrified Versions, Extended Range, and Global Focus, Anticipating a Broad Family That Includes Sedan, Hatch, Station Wagon, and SUV.
Toyota took the first public step towards the next generation of the Corolla by unveiling, in Tokyo, the Corolla Concept, a study that anticipates the best-selling sedan and hatch in the world and paves the way for an even larger family, including a station wagon and SUV.
The project combines a new batch of combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and 100% electric versions, targeting range of up to 2,100 km in the plug-in hybrid configuration to confront the technological offensive from Chinese brands like BYD.
Global Strategy and Multi-Energy Engines
Presented at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo, the Corolla Concept was described by the automaker as the next step in the philosophy of “mobility for all”.

Toyota assesses that the model must continue to meet markets with distinct energy conditions while remaining global and relatively accessible.
In the official statement, the brand emphasizes that it does not intend to rely on a single type of propulsion.
“The Earth is large and diverse. The roads and energy sources are too. We want to continue making beautiful cars that everyone wants to drive — regardless of the type of propulsion,” says the company’s statement.

Toyota Europe detailed that the Corolla Concept may operate as BEV, PHEV, conventional hybrid, or with a combustion engine, including the possibility of using CO₂ neutral fuels.
Responsible for the design, chief designer Lance Scott summarized that the goal is to completely reinvent the Corolla to meet different audiences.
“The Corolla is a car for the majority — but the majority doesn’t necessarily want the same answer,” he stated.
Range of Up to 2,100 Km and Direct Competition With BYD
Reports from the Japanese press indicate that the plug-in hybrid version of the new generation aims for up to 2,100 km of combined range, with a full tank and charged battery.
This target brings the Corolla closer to the benchmark set by BYD in its fifth generation of plug-in hybrid technology, which also promises similar numbers.
BYD claims to have achieved thermal efficiency exceeding 46% with the 1.5 engine dedicated to hybrids, establishing a benchmark that other manufacturers are trying to reach.
Currently, Toyota’s hybrid engines operate around 41% thermal efficiency, a difference the brand seeks to reduce with a new family of more compact and efficient engines.
The reports also mention a 1.5 four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine for the entry-level versions and a 1.5 turbo with around 180 hp for more powerful versions, including hybrids.

Toyota only confirms that the 1.5 turbo could deliver up to 30% more efficiency compared to the current 2.5 used in larger hybrids.
Complete Family: Sedan, Hatch, Station Wagon, and SUV Interpretation
The 13th generation is expected to maintain the global proposal with sedan, hatchback, and station wagon, repeating the strategy of the current lineup in different markets.
The “SUV option” within the Corolla range refers, in practice, to the Corolla Cross, a utility based on the TNGA-C platform and positioned between the C-HR and RAV4.
With the arrival of the new generation, the trend is that the SUV will also evolve, maintaining shared engines and electrified components.
In Brazil, there are still internal and external studies on a future coupe SUV and a monocoque pickup derived from the same base, expected after 2028.
Thus, the presence of the sedan, hatch, station wagon, and SUV under the Corolla name works as a product family and not necessarily as four identical body types.
Futuristic Design and Minimalist Interior

The Corolla Concept moves away from the more traditional look that characterized part of the model’s journey.
The prototype features fluid lines, lower and wider proportions, and a stance close to that of a four-door coupe, with large wheels positioned at the edges of the body.
At the front, LED bars span the entire width, while the rear features clean volumes and narrow taillights.
Inside, the highlight is the spacious panoramic roof, the use of light materials, and the absence of a central tunnel, reinforcing the feeling of space and anticipating an architecture designed for electrification.
The main information appears in an instrument cluster integrated into the steering column, complemented by tactile controls on the steering wheel and touch-sensitive surfaces.
Segment C and New Challenges in the Global Market
Despite the sophisticated look, Toyota states that the new Corolla will remain integrated into the compact midsize segment, where it faces models like Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic.

The novelty is that, in addition to these traditional competitors, the Corolla will now compete for space with pure electric vehicles of Chinese origin and with advanced hybrids from various brands.
TNGA-C Platform, Possibility e-TNGA, and Scheduled Timetable
The current generation, launched in 2018, uses the TNGA-C platform, compatible with various types of motorizations.
The 13th generation, anticipated by the concept displayed in Tokyo, is expected internationally for 2026, with expansion into other markets throughout 2027.
There are projections that fully electric versions may leverage modules from the e-TNGA platform, currently utilized by models such as the bZ4X.
In Brazil, the change of sedan production from Indaiatuba to Sorocaba should facilitate the integration of more advanced electrified versions, taking advantage of the synergy with the Corolla Cross.
With so many changes announced — new engines, expanded range, electrification, and family expansion — which version of the future Corolla would excite you the most to see on the streets?
