Reports indicate that the Camaro may return with four doors, manual transmission, and combustion engine, but Chevrolet has not yet officially confirmed the project nor released technical details of the new generation.
The Chevrolet Camaro may return to General Motors’ lineup in a different configuration from its sixth generation.
Information published by GM Authority suggests that the next phase of the sports car should be based on an evolution of the Alpha 2 platform, with a combustion engine, an option for a six-speed manual transmission, and a body with four doors.
Chevrolet, however, has not yet officially announced the model’s return nor released final specifications.

The investigation by the portal specialized in General Motors also indicates that the future Camaro will have a high-performance variant.
According to the site, a source familiar with the project confirmed the existence of a stronger version, while another informant said enthusiasts will be “very happy” with the model.
As there is no public statement from the automaker, the information should be treated as automotive industry backstage.
The sixth generation of the Camaro was discontinued after the 2024 model year.
In a statement released on March 22, 2023, GM reported that the last units would be assembled at the Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan in January 2024.
At the time, Scott Bell, global vice president of Chevrolet, said that the company was not announcing an immediate successor but stated that it would not be “the end of the Camaro story.”
New Chevrolet Camaro expected to change platform
The main change expected is in the car’s architecture.
The new Camaro is expected to use an updated version of the Alpha 2, a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform linked to Cadillac models like the CT4 and CT5.
According to Car and Driver, based on a report from Automotive News, the same base is expected to support the next Cadillac CT5, a new Buick sedan, and the Camaro’s replacement.
This technical point helps to understand why the project is still associated with the model’s traditional performance proposal.
The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration was present in the sixth generation and also appears in reports about the possible successor.
So far, however, GM has not confirmed engineering details, dimensions, versions, or mechanical set.
The most visible change should be in the bodywork.
Instead of returning only as a two-door coupe, the Camaro is pointed out as a four-door, mid-sized model, positioned close to former Chevrolet sedans like the Malibu and SS.
Specialized publications also mention the possibility of a lower and sportier silhouette, but without official confirmation of design or final proportions.
Camaro production may start at the end of 2027
A report cited by Car and Driver states that the future Camaro should be produced alongside the next Cadillac CT5 and a new Buick sedan at the Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan.
The publication indicates that production of the CT5 and Camaro is scheduled to begin at the end of 2027, which would suggest a North American market arrival as a 2028 model.
The difference between the start of production and model year is common in the U.S. automotive industry.
Therefore, a car manufactured in the second half of 2027 may be commercially launched as a 2028 model.
In the case of the Camaro, this interpretation still depends on confirmation from Chevrolet, which has not presented a public schedule for the potential new generation.
The same investigation reports that Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac vehicles should share a platform.
There is also mention of a combined annual production between CT5 and Camaro in the range of 60,000 to 75,000 units.
According to Car and Driver, Chevrolet and Buick were contacted but did not comment on the report.
Manual transmission appears among the key points
The possible offer of a manual transmission is one of the points mentioned by GM Authority in the coverage of the next Camaro.
According to the portal, the model should have an automatic and a six-speed manual transmission, maintaining an option aimed at consumers who prefer gear shifting done by the driver.
This information, like other project details, has not been confirmed by Chevrolet.
If maintained, the manual transmission would differentiate the Camaro from another sports car of the brand.
The Corvette C8, sold with a mid-engine, is offered with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Today, Chevrolet’s performance line in the United States has the Corvette as the brand’s main sports car, while the Camaro no longer appears in the current lineup after the end of the sixth generation.
In this scenario, a Camaro with a front engine, rear-wheel drive, and manual transmission would revive characteristics associated with previous generations.
The eventual adoption of four doors, however, would change the model’s relationship with the daily use proposal, as it would expand access to the rear seat and could alter the perception of the car among former coupe buyers.
Four-door Camaro would change traditional format
The four-door body would represent a significant change from the most well-known image of the Camaro.
The model was originally launched as a rival to the Ford Mustang and built its trajectory in coupe and convertible versions.
The sixth generation, sold between 2016 and 2024, also followed this configuration and had performance versions like SS and ZL1.
The possible change may be linked to an attempt to expand the commercial application of the Camaro name.
Sports coupes have a more restricted market share, while models with four doors tend to offer more practical use for passengers.
Still, the adoption of this format has not been confirmed by Chevrolet and remains based on behind-the-scenes information.
There are also reports mentioning a possible two-door variant.
Car and Driver treats the coupe configuration as a possibility within the next generation, alongside a four-door version.
For now, there is no confirmation that Chevrolet will sell both types of bodywork or that the Camaro will return simultaneously in more than one configuration.
Engines of the new Camaro have not yet been announced
Information about the engine remains without official confirmation.
Specialized publications indicate that the project should maintain combustion engines, but there is no announcement from GM about engines, power, or versions.
Car and Driver cites as a possibility a turbo four-cylinder engine in the entry version and a V8 in higher configurations, but these data have not been presented by the manufacturer.
The existence of a high-performance version also does not have a disclosed technical sheet.
There is no commercial name, power, torque, price, sales markets, presentation date, or position within the range.
The most reliable data at this moment is that sources heard by specialized publications point to a stronger configuration within the future Camaro family.
Caution is necessary because the future of the model has already been the subject of different rumors since the end of the sixth generation.
In recent years, hypotheses involving electrification, SUV, renewed coupe, and sports sedan have circulated.
GM has so far only confirmed that the sixth generation would end without an immediate successor and that the Camaro name was not necessarily discontinued.
