Drivers in the Federal District were surprised by a sudden and significant increase in the price of fuels on Friday, July 4, 2025. In response to complaints and the perception of an abusive adjustment, the Consumer Defense Institute of the Federal District (Procon-DF) initiated an inspection operation at the city’s gas stations.
According to an article published by the newspaper Correio Braziliense, the action, dubbed “Operation Bomba Livre”, aims to analyze the composition of prices and verify whether there has been a practice of abusive values. The measure seeks to protect consumers and ensure transparency in pricing at the pump.

The “Operation Bomba Livre”: The Action Of Procon-DF

In light of the increase, Procon-DF immediately initiated the “Operation Bomba Livre”. Inspection teams began to visit the gas stations in the Federal District to notify the establishments.
The notified stations will have to present the invoices for the purchase and sale of fuels for the last three months (April, May, and June 2025). The goal is to analyze the composition of the prices charged and verify whether the increase passed on to the consumer was abusive.
What Does Procon Say? The Words Of Director-General Marcelo De Faria
The Director-General of Procon-DF, Marcelo De Faria, stated that the action is a response to curb abusive practices. According to him, although the price is free, that does not give the right to harm the consumer.
Faria declared that, in an initial analysis, the increase in the price of fuels seems “unjustified” and “abusive”, and that the agency will analyze the invoices in detail to confirm or deny the irregularity.
The Reaction Of Consumers: Surprise And Indignation At The Pumps

Consumers were the first to feel the impact of the adjustment. Interviewed by the report, drivers like André Luiz classified the increase as “exorbitant” and “abusive”.
The general perception was one of surprise and indignation, as there was no prior announcement or a clear justification for such a significant rise in the price of fuels from one day to the next.
What Are The Possible Consequences For Gas Stations?
The inspection by Procon-DF may result in penalties for the establishments. After analyzing the invoices and the price composition, if the practice of abusive increase is proven, the gas stations may be fined.
The operation will continue in the coming days and seeks to ensure that consumers’ rights are respected and that the price of fuels is charged fairly in the Federal District.
