DNV GL Was Hired to Certify the Robustness of the CompRiser Solution, Marking a Significant Advancement for Ocyan and Its Partners in This Project
Ocyan is advancing in its pursuit of independent verification for the CompRiser®, a hybrid riser tower system launched last year in partnership with Magma and BrasFELS. The companies hired the certification body DNV GL to carry out this work, which began in February.
DNV GL’s verification is an independent endorsement that seeks to certify the robustness of the CompRiser® solution. In parallel, Magma is also in the process of qualifying the composite m-pipe® by Petrobras.

“DNV GL has a standard for composite pipe, but the independent verification we seek is specific to the CompRiser®,” explains Leandro Brusque, procurement manager at Ocyan.
The work is divided into two phases and is expected to be completed in the first half of the year. The first phase involves analyzing the entire design, including the project engineering itself, documentation, processes, and materials. The second focuses on FMECA (Failure Mode and Effect Cause Analysis – a way to document failure modes and their effects and criticality in an organized and systematic manner), prioritizing the system’s functionality and safety.
“Magma continues to develop its qualification program for pre-salt fields in Brazil, and we see DNV GL’s endorsement of the CompRiser® as a major milestone for the future use of our technology in Brazil and other deep-water fields,” explains Tony Duncan, Executive Vice President of Magma.
“We are excited to be part of this exciting project. DNV GL has extensive expertise in TCP and subsea systems for deep-water applications, and the combination of that expertise with our technological qualification and independent verification will positively contribute to the reliability of this promising development, the CompRiser®,” says Barbara Matos, Section Head at DNV GL Rio.
CompRiser
The CompRiser® is a hybrid riser tower system created in partnership with Magma Global for use in the deep and ultra-deep water oil exploration industry. The thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) used in the CompRiser will be the m-pipe®, manufactured by Magma.
The TCP has high resistance to corrosion (e.g., CO2 and H2S), of great value for subsea systems in pre-salt areas, significant weight reduction, and the ability to withstand high temperature and pressure. Its mechanical flexibility allows the design of a new concept for the lower termination (patent pending) that enables the riser to be connected directly to the flowline – both rigid and flexible.
Its compact and modular manufacturing method allows for high local content. Additionally, the pipe is delivered in coils and does not require welding, simplifying the assembly of the bundle, which can be completed in less than 30 days. The offshore installation takes another 20 days, without the need for special vessels and minimal exposure to adverse weather conditions.
As a decoupled solution, the product uses less than 20% of the load applied by other solutions on production units. The result of this difference can exceed 9,000 tons-force per FPSO, depending on the number of risers in the project. The reduction in weight and load in FPSO operations is a constant demand from operators.
At the end of last year, BrasFELS, the Brazilian shipyard of Keppel Offshore & Marine, joined the partnership initiated by Ocyan and Magma, due to its installed manufacturing capacity and reputation in the Brazilian market, further reducing the project’s risk assessment.
