The truck drivers’ strike is scheduled for November 2, the next religious holiday. However, already on the 1st, this Monday, it is possible to find at least three states blocked, such as Minas Gerais. Nereu (PSL) has already requested that the Federal Supreme Court (STF) not try to prevent the protesters from making their demonstrations since they are exercising their rights as stipulated by the Brazilian Constitution from the 1980s.
In Santa Catarina, the sources about the beginning of a strike are still scarce. However, in an interview with Adilson Souza, who works as a truck driver transporting gas and is a resident of Brusque, he claims that the start of the blockades in the state is expected from 8 a.m.
“People think that nothing will happen. But they do not anticipate the consequences of this strike. I believe the situation will worsen, the dollar tends to get more expensive, and gas as well. In the last strike we had in Santa Catarina, in September, I was unable to go pick up a load in Paraná for several days because many highways were blocked. In fact, the company suffered some losses because customers were calling asking for gas, and we had no stock”, said the employee who preferred not to disclose the name of the company.

Truck Drivers and the Strikes of the Year: What Are the Possible Consequences?
“In total, during the year 2021, we had two major strikes, despite the smaller ones that occurred with some frequency. The first was in February when President Bolsonaro decided to exempt federal taxes on diesel while Petrobras had already increased prices above 30%. The second was in September, during the Independence Day celebrations. In both cases, the dollar had variations above 2% due to the climate of instability. The Ibovespa dropped, harming some investors who were investing in the Brazilian stock market. I believe these are the possible complications for the country in November with this new wave of protests”, says Adilson.
According to the employee who works as a truck driver, the strike in Santa Catarina is expected to start around 8 a.m. via BR 101, which passes through key cities like Itajaí. The deadline for termination has not yet been determined, and “everything may depend on what is decided regarding the demands of the workers in the sector”.
In addition to lowering diesel prices, truck drivers across Brazil are also discussing reducing the retirement age, which was changed from 40 years to 65 for men and from 60 for women.
Gasoline Exceeds R$ 6.60 in the State of Santa Catarina
Gasoline has already exceeded R$ 6.60 in the state of Santa Catarina. According to economists, it is expected that the price will reach more than R$ 7 by the end of the year. The same goes for diesel, which in Brusque is already around R$ 6.10. The more pessimistic argue that it could reach up to R$ 8 by December if no agreements are made with Petrobras. Pacheco, President of the Senate, stated last week that he intended to meet with Luna e Silva, president of the state-owned company, to discuss the pricing policy being implemented.
