Gate Energy, an engineering, commissioning, and field services company based in Houston, and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) from South Korea have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This collaboration aims at offshore energy infrastructure projects. The news, announced by Offshore Energy, highlights the strengthening of the partnership between the two giants for the global offshore sector.
Details of the Memorandum of Understanding Between Gate Energy and HHI
The memorandum establishes that the two companies will jointly seek engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) opportunities. The main focus is on the offshore oil and gas sector in global markets. This agreement provides an overall framework for future cooperation and effective information sharing. It allows partners to adapt to new bids on a case-by-case basis. The MOU also includes provisions for joint planning and resource integration. There is also the potential development of execution models tailored to the developers’ needs.
Synergy of Competencies for the Offshore Sector
HHI and GATE Energy will act as strategic partners. HHI’s renowned expertise in delivering EPC for hull and topside complements GATE Energy’s vast commissioning and startup capabilities. The partnership aims to provide integrated solutions. The goal is to increase predictability and create lasting value for clients across the offshore sector landscape.

Leaders’ Statements on the New Phase of the Partnership
Mark Myhre, President of Commissioning at GATE Energy, commented on the importance of the agreement. “This Memorandum of Understanding represents the next chapter of a strong and growing relationship between GATE and HHI,” said Myhre. He added: “Our collaboration on the King’s Quay and Shenandoah projects demonstrated what is possible when two organizations align on technical expertise and delivery mindset.”
Jung-Ho Park, Vice President of HHI, also expressed optimism. “This Memorandum of Understanding represents the next step in an already solid partnership, built on mutual respect, technical excellence, and shared success,” said Park. “Together with GATE Energy, we are committed to driving the offshore energy sector.”
History of Collaboration on Key Projects in the Gulf of Mexico
The two companies already have a history of working together. One example is the Shenandoah project in the USA. HHI was contracted to manage the project, procurement, construction, and delivery of the floating production system (FPS) and its installation. Gate Energy was responsible for commissioning. Located in the deepwater region of the Gulf of Mexico, Shenandoah is being developed by Beacon Offshore Energy and its partners. The FPS has a nominal capacity of 120,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and the project is expected to begin producing oil soon.
Another notable project where the duo collaborates is the King’s Quay FPS. This system is responsible for the production from the Khaleesi, Mormont, and Samurai fields in the Green Canyon area, also in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Operated by Murphy Oil, with Ridgewood Energy as a partner, the project has been producing oil since 2022.
Impact and Future Prospects for the Global Offshore Sector
The formalization of this partnership between Gate Energy and HHI signals a significant strategic move for the offshore sector. The combination of their specialties promises to enhance the capacity to deliver complex projects globally. The focus on joint planning and tailored execution models suggests a more efficient and customized approach, benefiting developers and the market as a whole. This collaboration aims to add value and drive innovation in the dynamic offshore sector.
