The global agricultural sector is undergoing a revolution, and now, cow gallstones are worth twice as much as gold. Just one ounce of the material can fetch up to US$5,8.

Cow gallstones are worth twice as much as gold? While people do everything they can to avoid gallstones, in the agricultural world, the scenario is completely different. When found in bulls and cows, these hardened formations, known as bovine gallstones, have become a true treasure for farmers. With values that can exceed twice the price of gold, these stones, widely used in traditional Asian medicine, are gaining prominence in the global market, especially in Brazil. But why is this material so valuable? In this article, we explore the reasons behind the high demand, the marketing process and how this is transforming the agricultural sector.

Bovine gallbladder stones cost up to $5,8 per ounce

Cow gallstones are worth twice as much as gold and are one of the most valued ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. According to the American newspaper – The Wall Street Journal, they have become so valuable in global agriculture that traders are willing to pay up to $5,8 per ounce (28,34 grams), twice the price of gold, for each of these hardened pieces of bile.

Chinese herbalists use stones to treat strokes. The country is currently dealing with a rise in high blood pressure, obesity and other conditions common in the West. These health problems are also part of the world’s second-largest economy, after half a century of economic and dietary changes.

A bilirubin, the dark orange compound produced during the natural breakdown of red blood cells, is normally excreted by the body. However, when it accumulates in the form of gallstones, or gallstones, it can be harmful and even fatal to cattle, humans, or any vertebrate.

However, gallstones in cattle are worth twice as much as gold and the growing demand has sparked a global agricultural treasure hunt in the world's major beef producing regions, from places like Texas and Australia to Brazil, the world's largest beef exporter.

How are bovine gallstones used in global agriculture?

Practiced for thousands of years, traditional medicine is still widely used in China, often in conjunction with Western medicine, and preparing hardened bile for consumption is an art. Cow gallstones are worth twice as much as gold, Once collected, they are carefully cleaned and left to dry for weeks before being crushed.

Na China, the powder is typically mixed with other ingredients, from powdered buffalo horn to realgar, a red stone that contains arsenic. The combination is modeled after what are called Angong pills. Many of the other purported benefits of cow gallstones, from reducing fever to treating infections, have little scientific basis.

But recent experimental studies have found that the pills could help buy time in treating strokes, according to Chinese-born doctor Donghai Wen, now at Massachusetts General Hospital and an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.

Other Benefits of Cow Gallbladder Stone Pills

A recent study in rats at the University of Hong Kong found evidence that Angong pills can delay the effects of an ischemic stroke, the most common type of stroke where a clot blocks blood flow to the brain.

Researchers found that several ingredients in the pill protected the membrane surrounding the brain, which could give stroke victims an extra 30 minutes to get to the hospital before suffering irreversible and, in some cases, fatal brain damage.

This has made bovine gallstone powder an increasingly sought-after item in China, where the WHO says strokes have become the leading cause of death.
