Researchers From Unesp Show in New Study That There Really Is a Ninth Hidden Planet, and It Is Already Causing a Real Stir Among the Comets.
If you think our Solar System is already complete with eight planets, it’s time to make some room in your mind: a new study conducted by Brazilian researchers from Unesp, in partnership with scientists from the United States and France, has just brought to light strong evidence of the existence of the famous and elusive Planet 9. And get this: it is already leaving clear traces in our cosmic backyard!
The idea of a ninth planet in the Solar System is not new—it dates back to 1846 when Neptune was discovered. But to this day, no one has seen this celestial body directly. The reason? The so-called Planet 9 would be at an absurd distance, approximately 600 times farther from the Sun than Earth, making its observation practically impossible.
However, now this mystery has gained full strength thanks to the new study published in the renowned scientific journal Icarus in June 2025. The team led by Rafael Ribeiro de Sousa, a scientist at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of Unesp, conducted meticulous simulations that prove that, yes, Planet 9 not only exists but also directly affects the behavior of the comets that inhabit distant regions of the Solar System.

How Did the New Study Prove That Planet 9 Exists?
The scientists used powerful simulations, recreating billions of years of our Solar System’s history with and without the planet. Result? Without it, the numbers didn’t add up: comets observed in real life simply would not appear in the simulations. But with the inclusion of the ninth planet, surprise: things started to make sense immediately.
The research leader, Rafael Sousa, was categorical: “Our simulations were consistent with what we actually see in space. With Planet 9, we reached about 4 observed comets, just as happens in reality. Without it, we don’t even get to one”, he explained.
And Its Size? Giant or Small?
Here is another turning point in this new study. It was previously thought to be a giant celestial body, about 15 times the mass of Earth. Now, researchers assert that it should have approximately 7.5 Earth masses. Still large, it’s true, but much smaller than previous speculations.
Why Hasn’t Anyone Seen This Planet Yet?
Simple: the distance is a huge problem. Additionally, its complete orbit around the Sun would take no less than 10,000 years, making it even harder to locate. It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack, only it’s in deep space. Rafael Sousa confirmed: “They need to reflect sunlight to be seen, but the light in that region is very weak. It’s an absurd challenge.”
What to Expect Moving Forward?
With this new study, scientists now want to go beyond: they aim to understand how Planet 9 also affects even more distant comets, coming from the Oort Cloud. The search for more objects in that region has already begun, all to finally reveal the exact location of the most mysterious celestial body in our cosmic backyard.
Now we just have to hope that more powerful telescopes will be developed, finally allowing us to see this ghost planet.
