The Two Largest Lithotheques in Brazil Will Cover From the First Discoveries of Oil on Land to the Recent Ones Extracted from the Pre-Salt. The Objective of Petrobras Is to Preserve the Geological Memory of the Country.
Petrobras reported in a relevant fact that it has advanced in an agreement with the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and the Geological Service of Brazil (SGB-CPRM) for the installation of the two largest geological rock collections in the country (the so-called “lithotheques”) – one in Rio de Janeiro and another in Caeté (MG). The ceremony that marked the project’s progress took place this Friday (28/10) at the company’s headquarters in RJ and was attended by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, as well as representatives from Petrobras, ANP, SGB-CPRM, and IBP.
The samples collection is owned by the Union and is currently under the custody of Petrobras. The project is the result of a letter of intent signed in 2018 by Petrobras, SGB-CPRM, and ANP, aiming for cooperation and technical operational support for the enhancement of geological knowledge applied to the oil and gas sectors.
According to the state company, the letter of intent also provides for the installation of the Reference Center in Geosciences, with high-performance laboratories, and the revitalization of the Earth Sciences Museum.

In 2020, Petrobras and SGB-CPRM signed a cooperation agreement for the development of projects and construction of the lithotheques. In parallel, the institutions began the executive project for the installation of the Reference Center in Geosciences, as well as the renovation and expansion of the Earth Sciences Museum.
Lithotheques Should House Hundreds of Thousands of Rock Samples Collected Over More Than 70 Years of History of Oil Exploration and Production in Brazil
Once built, the lithotheques should house hundreds of thousands of rock samples collected over more than 70 years of history of oil exploration and production in Brazil, covering a period that spans from the first discoveries on land to the recent finds extracted from the pre-salt.
The objective of Petrobras is to contribute to the dissemination of geoscientific knowledge to academia and research institutions, in addition to preserving the geological memory of the country.
To give you an idea, the pre-salt rocks, collected at more than 7,000 meters deep, contain an expressive volume of data essential for understanding the origin of the field formations, as well as serving as a legacy for future discoveries.
