Morpho Well Marks The Beginning Of The Exploratory Campaign On The Equatorial Margin In An Area Considered Strategic And Technically Challenging By Petrobras, With An Estimated Depth Of 7,081 Meters And Drilling Expected To Last Five Months.
The first exploratory well by Petrobras in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, on the Equatorial Margin, began drilling on October 20, the date when Ibama authorized the operation.
With an estimated depth of 7,081 meters, the Morpho well is expected to take around five months to be completed and is now part of the list of the largest drillings ever conducted by the company.
The drilling takes place in block FZA-M-59, located in deep waters, approximately 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá.

While an American factory takes months to deliver a thousand trucks, this Chinese giant churns out 20,000 a year, sells directly to governments around the world, and is devouring the Western market mercilessly.
According to technical information from Petrobras, the objective of this phase is to collect geological data that will help identify the presence and potential of oil and gas in the region.
There are no production activities at this stage.
Record Depth And Morpho Well Position In Petrobras Ranking
With the expected depth, Morpho becomes the 5th deepest well in the history of the state-owned company.
Company data indicates that the ranking is led by the Monai well, in the Espírito Santo Basin, at approximately 7,700 meters.
Next are the Parati, in the Santos Basin, at 7,628 meters; the Tortuga Leste, in block Aram, at 7,250 meters; and Curaçao, also in Aram, at 7,130 meters.
The drilling involves successive steps of advancement and casing, according to procedures applied in ultra-deepwater operations.
Technical sources explain that, in such locations, execution timelines close to five months are compatible with the level of complexity of the geological formations.
Equatorial Margin And The Potential Of The New Exploratory Frontier
The Foz do Amazonas Basin is part of the group of basins known as the Equatorial Margin, a belt extending from Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte.

Energy sector authorities and technical studies released by public and private institutions consider the area a possible new exploration frontier, with potential still under evaluation.
According to the planning presented by Petrobras, the company intends to drill eight exploratory wells in the Foz do Amazonas in the coming years.
The Morpho is the first of this campaign, which also includes plans to drill three auxiliary wells, conditioned on the results of the main well.
Company technicians indicate that, if reserves are confirmed and regulatory progress is made, production projects could be structured over the next decade, a scenario that depends solely on the data obtained from the drillings.
Ibama License And Historical Context Of Environmental Process
Ibama granted the license in October, after about five years of analyses and requests for adjustments.
Public documents from the environmental agency show that the process included the requirement for a EIA/Rima, public hearings, technical meetings, and a Pre-Operational Assessment with emergency simulations involving dozens of vessels, aircraft, and specialized teams.
The release occurred at a time of intensified debate over oil exploration in the region.
Environmental organizations expressed concern about potential impacts on sensitive ecosystems, such as reefs and mangrove areas.
Technicians from these entities claim that the Equatorial Margin has characteristics that require reinforced safety protocols.
Meanwhile, representatives of the energy sector and state authorities say that advancing exploration can increase regional revenues and investments, provided it is accompanied by stringent environmental criteria.
Studies cited by government agencies project that the Equatorial Margin may contain significant reserves, although this potential still depends on ongoing discoveries.
Exploratory Activities Also Advance In The Potiguar Basin
Besides the Foz do Amazonas, Petrobras maintains activities in the Potiguar Basin, in Rio Grande do Norte, another area that is part of the Equatorial Margin.
Two exploratory wells have already been drilled, with no confirmation of economically viable reserves.
The company plans to start drilling a third well in the coming months, following the same data collection procedures for evaluation.
Experts in geology of the Brazilian continental margin assert that advancing studies in the different basins of the Equatorial Margin will better understand the region’s potential and guide decisions on possible development projects.
With the drilling of the Morpho well and the expansion of the exploratory campaign, a central question arises for governments, companies, and experts: how to reconcile the expansion of oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin with environmental protection policies and climate goals established by the country?
