Petrobras successfully completed the modernization works of Train I of the Abreu e Lima Refinery (RNEST), located in Ipojuca, Pernambuco. This project aims to increase the processing capacity of the refinery and reinforces the state-owned company’s commitment to refining infrastructure in Brazil. Meanwhile, preparations for the construction of Train II, which will double the production capacity of the unit, are advancing.

Modernization of Train I of RNEST

Petrobras invested approximately R$ 93 million in the modernization works of Train I of RNEST. With this expansion, the refinery can now process 130,000 barrels of oil per day, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 115,000 barrels per day.

This initiative is part of Petrobras’ investment plan, which will allocate about US$ 19.6 billion to the refining, transportation, marketing, petrochemical, and fertilizer sectors by 2029.

Petrobras Advances in the Works of Train II

The works of Train II of RNEST are in the contracting process and are expected to generate around 30,000 direct and indirect jobs. Upon completion of this phase, the refinery will double its processing capacity, reaching a total of 260,000 barrels of oil per day.

Renata Baruzzi, Executive Director of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation at Petrobras, emphasized that the implementation of Train II will allow for greater production of derivatives such as gasoline, LPG, and naphtha, in addition to expanding the supply of S-10 diesel, a fuel with lower sulfur content.

“By 2029, all S500 diesel production will be replaced by S10 diesel production, which has lower sulfur content, and RNEST is an important element in this chain,” said Baruzzi.

In December 2024, RNEST inaugurated the SNOX unit, the first of its kind in Brazilian refining. This innovative system reduces emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and allows the production of sulfuric acid, a valuable input for the industry and potable water treatment.

The Abreu e Lima Refinery (RNEST) began operations in 2014, marking a significant advancement for the refining sector in Brazil. Its first set of units, Train I, was the first major refining project by Petrobras after 34 years without new refineries.

RNEST is considered Petrobras’ most modern refinery, with advanced technology and a high level of automation. Its structure is designed to ensure operational efficiency, low energy consumption, and reduced environmental impact. Among its main features, the following stand out:
