Petrobras Signs Contracts Worth R$ 4.9 Billion to Advance the Construction of Trem 2 at RNEST. Refinery Will Double Production Capacity by 2029 and is Expected to Generate 30 Thousand Jobs.
Petrobras officially signed, last Monday (16), the first contracts for the resumption of works on Trem 2 at the Abreu e Lima Refinery (RNEST), located in Pernambuco. The agreements, signed with Consag Engenharia S.A., amount to approximately R$ 4.9 billion and cover the construction of three important refining units.
The objective is to increase the installed capacity of RNEST, which is expected to double by 2029, from 130 thousand to 260 thousand barrels per day, establishing it as Petrobras’s second-largest refinery.
In addition to strengthening the company’s infrastructure in the North and Northeast, the project is aligned with the State Company’s Business Plan 2025-2029 and reinforces the company’s commitment to energy security, regional development, and job creation.

RNEST: A Strategic Pillar of Petrobras for National Refining
According to Magda Chambriard, President of Petrobras, RNEST is a key piece in the country’s refining network.
“RNEST is strategic for Brazil, Petrobras’s hub in the North and Northeast regions. The contracts for the resumption of the works on Trem 2 at the refinery reveal the company’s commitment to the country’s development,” she stated.
The expansion includes the Delayed Coking Unit (UCR), with a capacity to process 75 thousand barrels/day; the Diesel Hydrotreater Unit S10 (UHDT-D), with 82 thousand barrels/day; and the Atmospheric Distillation Unit (UDA), with 130 thousand barrels/day.
These structures will allow for greater production of low-sulfur fuels and higher value-added derivatives.
Environmental and Technological Advances of the Refinery
Since it began operations in 2014 with Trem 1, RNEST has stood out as Petrobras’s most modern refinery, with a high degree of automation.
In December 2024, the unit began operating SNOX, the first of its kind in Brazilian refining, focused on reducing pollutant emissions and producing sulfuric acid, a new product marketed by the state-owned company.
In March of this year, Petrobras completed the modernization of Trem 1, keeping the refinery in constant evolution. With the construction of Trem 2, the company aims to establish RNEST as a technological, environmental, and productive reference in the refining sector in Brazil.
Job Creation and Regional Impact
The construction of the new RNEST units has the potential to create approximately 30 thousand direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local economy and promoting social inclusion through income generation.
With the conclusion of the works scheduled for 2029, the refinery will be essential to meet the growing demand for derivatives of oil in the country, increasing national self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imports.
