Petrobras continues its exploration program in the Equatorial Margin, an area that encompasses the sedimentary basins off the northern coast of Brazil. According to news released by Petronotícias, the state-owned company began drilling the Anhangá well in February, in the POT-M-762 block, in the Potiguar Basin, in Rio Grande do Norte. The oil well is located 79 km offshore and has a water depth of 1,180 meters. The rig contracted for the operation is the ODN-II, from the company Foresea. However, it is still awaiting approval to explore in the Amazon Mouth.

The Anhangá well is the second that Petrobras is drilling in the Equatorial Margin this year.
In January, the company completed drilling the Pitu Oeste well in the same block and announced the discovery of hydrocarbons.

However, there is still no definition regarding the commercial viability of the area, which depends on further studies and tests.
Petrobras also hopes to obtain environmental authorization to begin drilling in the Amazon Mouth Basin, where it has 12 exploratory blocks.
The company has already requested an extension from the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) to comply with the exploration plan for these blocks, which expires in May of this year.
The Amazon Mouth is considered an exploratory frontier with high potential, but also with high environmental risk.

The Equatorial Margin is one of Petrobras’ priorities for the coming years.
In its Strategic Plan 2024–2028, the company plans to invest US$ 3.1 billion in oil and gas research and development in the region, with drilling of 16 wells by 2028.
Petrobras aims to expand its hydrocarbon reserves and diversify its asset portfolio.
