Green Revolution: Petrobras and New Development Bank Establish Strategic and Ambitious Partnerships on Chinese Soil Towards Energy Transition
Petrobras, the Brazilian oil giant, held a historic meeting on Chinese soil, establishing new guidelines and plans for energy transition and decarbonization. The meeting, held in Shanghai, marked a significant step in the partnership between Petrobras and the New Development Bank (NDB), known for financing infrastructure and development projects.
Exploring New Projects in the Areas of Biorefining, Biofuels, Green Hydrogen, Wind, and Solar
The president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, and the director of Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mauricio Tolmasquim, led a high-level meeting with NDB president Dilma Rousseff on September 1st. The main agenda of this strategic meeting was the exploration of new projects in the areas of biorefining, biofuels, green hydrogen, wind, and solar.
This meeting marks a turning point in the commercial relations between Petrobras and the NDB. In 2018, Petrobras signed a credit line contract worth US$ 200 million with the NDB, intended for environmental projects at Reduc and Regap, which were fully settled in 2021. Now, the focus is on energy transition, aligning with global carbon emission reduction targets.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

Silicon Valley bets on a 100-hour battery that uses carbon and oxygen to store renewable energy for days and could turn a little-known chemical system into an alternative to critical metal batteries to tackle prolonged blackouts.

Fortescue announces a radical shift by replacing diesel with a system featuring 1.2 GW of solar energy, 600 MW of wind energy, and up to 5 GWh in batteries, a giant project that could save $100 million per year and transform heavy mining into one of the largest 100% renewable operations in the world by 2028.

Technology and tradition meet: artisanal fishing in Rio de Janeiro uses solar energy to cut costs, reduce pollution, and transform the future of hundreds of riverside families.
Petrobras is committed to redefining its role in the global energy landscape. President Jean Paul Prates detailed the company’s new projects and the strategy to achieve a successful energy transition. These efforts aim not only to reduce the environmental impact of Petrobras operations but also to establish a positive benchmark in the search for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
The partnership with the NDB becomes crucial in this context. The bank, founded in 2014 and with shareholders including Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa, Bangladesh, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, represents a unique opportunity for Petrobras to expand its horizons and embrace the energy revolution taking place worldwide.
Meeting Marks a Turning Point in the Commercial Relations Between Petrobras and the NDB
“Our meeting with the NDB was extremely relevant. We reopened the dialogue with the institution for financing company projects, especially in the area of energy transition”, emphasizes Prates. Petrobras’ commitment to seeking cleaner and more sustainable energy production alternatives aligns perfectly with the mission of the NDB to finance development and infrastructure projects.
The meeting in Shanghai also included important NDB advisors such as Aguinaldo Barbieri, Marco Túlio Mendonça, and Alessandro Teixeira, along with the Brazilian deputy consul in Shanghai, José Roberto de Andrade. This intercontinental collaboration demonstrates both parties’ commitment to facing the challenges of global energy transition.
Meeting Ends the Strategic Mission of Petrobras in China on a High Note
This meeting with the NDB concluded the strategic mission of Petrobras in China on a high note. Launched on August 25, the mission encompassed an impressive total of 17 meetings and technical visits to Chinese companies and institutions in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai.
The Petrobras delegation included directors Sérgio Caetano (Finance and Investor Relations) and Joelson Mendes (Exploration & Production), as well as the ambassador of Brazil in Beijing, Marcos Galvão. Together, they established significant agreements aimed at promoting joint ventures in the segments of exploration and production, energy transition, refining, petrochemicals, renewable energy, hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon capture.
China Represents a Bold Step Towards a More Sustainable and Cleaner Future
The agreements and memoranda signed in China represent a bold step towards a more sustainable and cleaner future. The partnerships aim to execute projects in several regions, including Brazil, China, Bolivia, and Suriname. This demonstrates the joint commitment of Petrobras and the NDB to lead the global energy transition, reduce carbon emissions, and explore new energy sources such as green hydrogen, wind and solar energy, and biofuels.
