Petrobras Advances in Decarbonization: CO₂ Emissions Decrease by 40% in Nine Years, Surpassing Targets and Consolidating Leadership in Sustainability
On May 23, 2025, Petrobras announced that it reduced CO₂ emissions by 40%, marking a significant milestone in sustainability. Although the initial target was a 30% reduction by 2030, the company surpassed this expectation five years ahead of schedule. Thus, according to data published in the Climate Change Notebook, this progress reinforces the state-owned company’s commitment to the energy transition. Therefore, in addition to demonstrating environmental responsibility, the company also positions itself as a reference in the sector by prioritizing concrete actions.
Effective Strategies Drive Emission Reductions
In 2024, Petrobras operations emitted 47 million tons of CO₂, remaining close to 46 million in 2023 and 48 million in 2022. This stability, even with increased production, results from strategic actions such as the reinjection of CO₂ in pre-salt fields, which reached 14.2 million tons, representing over 25% of the global total. Additionally, the company achieved its best historical result in methane emissions, with 0.20 tons per thousand tons of hydrocarbons produced, a reduction of 70% compared to 2015.
Commitment to Carbon Neutrality by 2050
Petrobras reaffirms its goal of achieving operational emissions neutrality by 2050, known as “net zero.” To this end, it plans to implement energy efficiency measures, replace energy sources, and, if necessary, acquire carbon credits. In March 2025, the company announced the purchase of R$ 450 million in carbon credits in the Amazon region, demonstrating its commitment to offsetting residual emissions.

New Petrobras Projects Focus on CO2 Reduction
Mauricio Tolmasquim, Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability since 2023, highlighted the importance of balancing increased production with emission reductions. According to him, Petrobras plans to put ten new floating production storage and offloading units (FPSO) into operation by 2030 without increasing greenhouse gas emissions. This approach aims to meet the growing global energy demand while maintaining environmental commitments.
Petrobras Report Highlights CO2 Reduction and Climate Goals by 2050
The Climate Change Notebook, published annually, reflects Petrobras’s commitment to transparency and sustainability. The state-owned company currently represents 3% of Brazilian emissions, considering direct and indirect emissions. With the implementation of advanced technologies and strict environmental policies, Petrobras consolidates its position as a leader in the energy transition, aligning with global goals to combat climate change.

Its like you read my mind You appear to know so much about this like you wrote the book in it or something I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit but other than that this is fantastic blog A great read Ill certainly be back
