Saudi Arabia Creates Humain, AI Company Led by Tareq Amin, Backed by Sovereign Fund with Focus on Data Centers and Proprietary Technology.

According to a report from Forbes, Saudi Arabia has taken another step in the global race for leadership in artificial intelligence with the launch of the Humain company.

The new project will be led by Tareq Amin, former executive of Aramco Digital and Rakuten, and aims to operate across the entire value chain of artificial intelligence.

New National AI Strategy

According to Amin himself, Humain represents a crucial step for the development of a national AI strategy in Saudi Arabia.

The mission, he said, is to pave the way for a broad transformation in the country through artificial intelligence.

The company was officially launched on May 13, the same date as Donald Trump’s first official visit to Saudi Arabia during his presidency of the United States.

The timing was symbolic, as the expectation of the visit was to boost American investments in the country.

Support from the Saudi Sovereign Fund

The project has the backing of the Saudi Sovereign Fund (PIF), which will not only finance the operation but also intends to direct Humain to develop proprietary technologies, encourage the use of AI tools in the Saudi economy, and optimize the construction of data centers in the country.

Although the specific budget for the project has not been revealed, Saudi Arabia has shown itself to be a major investor in the area.

Only this year, about US$ 15 billion in agreements with chip manufacturers, cloud companies, and data center operators were announced during the Leap conference, aimed at the technology sector.

Known Name and Strategic Team

Tareq Amin, who resigned as CEO of Aramco Digital in December, will be responsible for leading the project.

Information from sources close to the situation indicates that Humain has already attracted professionals from other state initiatives, such as Aramco Digital itself, the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), and the company Tonomus, linked to the futuristic city Neom.

On the social media of the professionals involved, it is possible to see updates confirming the transfer of talent from these projects to the new initiative.

The official page of Humain highlights that the goal is to provide a complete solution, ready to scale and solve real problems.

The site also redirects to a state chatbot and the company Groq, specialized in AI-focused chips.

Competition with the United Arab Emirates

The launch of Humain also represents a response to the movement of the United Arab Emirates, which created a state fund of US$ 100 billion focused exclusively on artificial intelligence.

This fund has become one of the main investors in OpenAI and other local startups that received foreign investments.

Although Saudi Arabia was pointed out in March as a possible creator of a similar fund, the country opted to launch a unified operational company instead of a traditional investment fund.

The original project name was Project Transcendence, and the main idea was to position the country as a regional protagonist in the area.

Tech Giants Involved

During Trump’s visit, the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum will be held. The event will gather leaders from major technology companies in the United States, such as Jensen Huang (Nvidia), Andy Jassy (Amazon), and Alex Karp (Palantir).

Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman were also invited to the meeting in Riyadh, according to Reuters.

The expectation is that access to artificial intelligence chips will be one of the main topics of discussion. The quest for next-gen GPUs is central to the plans of Saudi and Emirati interests.

However, the Biden administration has imposed restrictions on chip exports due to concerns that these technologies could reach China. According to Reuters, Trump suggested that these rules could be relaxed.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has intensified its efforts in the technology sector as part of an effort to diversify its economy, reducing dependence on oil.

With the establishment of Humain, the country signals its intention to compete on the global stage of artificial intelligence with a robust structure led by experienced names.

Meanwhile, recent agreements with companies like Groq, Cerebras, Oracle, and Google show that the kingdom is determined to solidify itself as a strategic hub for the future of AI in the Middle East.
