Scandal of Drunk Pilots Shakes Company! After Previous Incidents, the Company Imposes Severe Sanctions and Announces New Safety Measures.
There are moments when public and passenger confidence in an airline can be shaken by something unexpected.
The story you are about to read, involving Japan Airlines (JAL), is one of those situations that not only jeopardizes the company’s image but also the safety of passengers and crew members.
The episode, which occurred at the end of last year, features two pilots who, on the eve of an international flight, consumed more alcohol than allowed by JAL’s strict regulations.

This irresponsible behavior led to consequences that not only impacted the pilots directly but also affected the company’s top executives, with severe penalties for those involved.
The Consequence of the Error: Severe Sanctions and Strict Measures
According to information from R7 news portal, JAL representatives, CEO Mitsuko Tottori and President Yuji Akasaka, along with three other executives, will be punished in response to the incident.
The punishment for the company leaders includes a 30% salary cut for two months. This cut aims, among other things, to hold them accountable for the management failure that allowed the situation to occur.
The incident was the trigger for the application of sanctions. In the month prior to the occurrence, two pilots had consumed excess alcohol on the day before a flight from Melbourne, Australia, to Tokyo, Japan.
A routine pre-flight check detected that the pilots’ blood alcohol level was above the allowable limit, contrary to the company’s internal rules, which prohibit alcohol consumption within 12 hours before boarding.
Previous Incidents and a History of Failures
This is not the first incident of failure related to alcohol consumption among Japan Airlines pilots.
In 2018, a pilot was caught with an alcohol level above the permitted limit when reporting for a flight from London to Tokyo.
The result was the cancellation of the flight and the pilot’s arrest, as well as penalties for the managers responsible for safety oversight, including Akasaka, the current president of JAL.
At that time, some managers faced salary cuts of up to 20% for three months.
Furthermore, in April 2024, an even more recent episode underscored the severity of the issue. A pilot was found to be intoxicated before a flight from Dallas to Tokyo.
The inappropriate behavior and confirmation of excessive alcohol consumption led to the cancellation of the flight, causing inconveniences to passengers and further damaging the company’s reputation.
The Response of JAL: New Protocols to Prevent New Scandals
Not willing to let this type of incident go unnoticed, Japan Airlines recently presented a series of strict measures to the Ministry of Transport to prevent similar episodes from recurring.
One of the actions will be the creation of a list of crew members with a history of excessive alcohol consumption, allowing the company to monitor these professionals more closely.
The measure also provides for intensified controls and the implementation of new prevention strategies to ensure that passenger safety is not compromised.
These protocols, in turn, aim to restore trust in the company, not just in the Japanese market but also internationally.
The Impact on the Airline Market and Passenger Confidence
The scandal involving JAL pilots has implications that go beyond the company itself.
When an incident like this occurs, it generates a wave of distrust among passengers and can negatively affect the airline’s image, potentially leading to a decrease in demand for its services.
Additionally, such issues reinforce the need for greater oversight and control over professionals working in the aviation sector.
After all, the risk that irresponsible behavior can pose is irreparable, especially when lives are at stake.
The Future of Japan Airlines: What to Expect?
After these scandals, Japan Airlines finds itself at a crossroads: will it be able to regain its credibility in time to prevent more passengers from losing confidence in the airline?
Or will this mark the beginning of a cycle of failures that will further shake its image? Only time will tell.
However, JAL’s initial response, with new measures to control crew behavior and the implementation of a more rigorous oversight system, is an important step to ensure that the company not only preserves its reputation but also guarantees the safety and well-being of its passengers.
