Goodbye Gol and Palio! Toyota Car Delivers Everything the Brazilian Driver Needs: Reliability, Good Resale Value, Performance, and Affordable Maintenance

Goodbye VW Gol and Fiat Palio! While fuel prices continue to strain the wallets of Brazilians, one model in particular stands out in the used car market. The Toyota Etios, even after its discontinuation in 2021, remains unbeatable among the most sought-after used cars in the country. With prices starting at R$ 40,000 and fuel consumption that can reach 14 km/l, the Toyota car has won over not only app drivers but also families and young people looking for economy, durability, and comfort in their daily lives.

National production in Sorocaba (SP) was decisive in keeping prices competitive. According to Toyota, more than 2,000 jobs were generated at the plant, which also supplied neighboring markets such as Argentina and Paraguay.

Toyota Car Delivers Everything the Brazilian Driver Needs: Reliability, Good Performance, and Affordable Maintenance

Each month, the Etios gains more space on consumers’ radars. According to surveys from platforms like OLX and Webmotors, there was an increase of over 15% in the search for the Etios just in 2024. Part of this success is attributed to the balance between cost-benefit and low depreciation. Units manufactured between 2018 and 2020 cost, on average, R$ 40,000 in the hatch version and R$ 50,000 in the sedan model, positioning them ahead of rivals such as the Volkswagen Gol and the Fiat Argo.

“The Etios delivers everything the Brazilian driver needs: reliability, good performance, and affordable maintenance,” says Carlos Silveira, automotive consultant at AutoInforme.

Economic and Versatile Engine Promises to Surpass 14 km/l on the Road

With 1.3 and 1.5 flex engine options, the Toyota Etios is recognized for its energy efficiency. In urban areas, the car can achieve 12.5 km/l with gasoline and 8.5 km/l with ethanol, while on highways, the number can exceed 14.2 km/l with gasoline, depending on the calibration and driving conditions.

Version / Fuel Urban Consumption (km/l) Highway Consumption (km/l) Urban Range (45L) Highway Range (45L)
Etios X 1.3 (Gasoline) 12.6 km/l 14.2 km/l 567 km 639 km
Etios X 1.3 (Ethanol) 8.6 km/l 9.8 km/l 387 km 441 km
Etios Sedan X 1.5 (Gasoline) 12.5 km/l 15 km/l 562.5 km 675 km
Etios Sedan X 1.5 (Ethanol) 8.5 km/l 10.3 km/l 382.5 km 463.5 km

 Note: The tank capacity is 45 liters. Values may vary depending on driving style, traffic, and use of accessories such as air conditioning.

In addition, the engine complies with emission standards and shows consistent performance even under continuous use, being highly sought after by those working in passenger transport.

Models from 2016 onward come with power steering and suspension adjusted for Brazilian roads, making driving more comfortable, even on bumpy streets.

Internal Space Surprises and Pleases App Drivers

Although classified as a compact car, the Etios stands out for its intelligent internal space. The sedan version features a generous trunk of 562 liters, larger than the Chevrolet Onix Plus (469 L) and even some mid-sized models. Meanwhile, the hatch, with 270 liters, serves small families well and drivers who prioritize urban maneuverability.

The cabin is functional and practical. The digital dashboard, accessible controls, and durable fabric seats make the interior ideal for long journeys.

Low Maintenance Cost: Toyota Has More Than 200 Dealerships in Brazil, Facilitating Revisions and Repairs in Any Region of the Country

In times of tight budgets, the maintenance of the Etios is one of the factors that most attract consumers. According to estimates from the automaker, revisions up to 60,000 km cost around R$ 2,500, a figure lower than competitors like the Hyundai HB20, which can exceed R$ 3,000 in the same period.

Additionally, parts such as filters and brake pads are inexpensive and widely available. “It’s a model with simple, reliable mechanics that’s cheap to maintain. Ideal for those who drive a lot,” assesses mechanic Jorge Martins, from Rede Pit Stop.

The Toyota network, with more than 200 dealerships in Brazil, makes it easier to carry out revisions and repairs in any region.

Simple but Functional Technology

The Etios has never been a technological car, but it delivers the basics efficiently. Versions from 2018 onward come with multimedia center with touch screenBluetooth and support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Items like front airbagsABS brakespower steering and rearview camera are some of the features present in the more complete versions, like the Platinum.

Even without major innovations, the setup perfectly meets daily usage and helps reduce maintenance costs with electronics.

Etios Is a Highlight in Used Car Sales

According to Fenabrave, the Toyota Etios was among the most sold cars in Brazil in 2024, with greater prominence for the sedan version. On resale portals, the average time to sell the model is around 20 days, an excellent figure among compacts.

This high turnover demonstrates the Etios’s high liquidity, an important factor for anyone considering reselling it in the future. Among used compacts, the model is in fierce competition with the Volkswagen Gol and the Fiat Palio.

A Car for All Audiences

The Toyota Etios is one of the few models capable of pleasing different user profiles. For young drivers, the more accessible price and low consumption are deciding factors. Families prefer the sedan version, which offers more luggage space. Meanwhile, app drivers see the Etios as a durable and low-cost partner for driving all day.

The model also shows differentiated regional performance: in the Northeast, it is widely used by families; in the Southeast, it dominates among app transport professionals; and in the South, it is valued for regional trips.

How Does the Etios Fare Against Its Competitors?

Although facing strong rivals, the Etios has clear advantages. The Chevrolet Onix offers a robust dealership network, but has higher maintenance costs. The Hyundai HB20 features more embedded technology but charges more at the entry price. Meanwhile, the Fiat Argo focuses on design but loses out in space and cost-benefit.

Main advantages of the Etios:

  • Lowest maintenance cost among direct competitors;
  • Largest trunk in the sedan category;
  • Toyota’s mechanical reliability;
  • Lower depreciation, ideal for future resale.

Mechanical Resilience and Toyota’s Strategy Keep Etios at the Top of the Used Car Market

Despite no longer being produced, the Etios continues to be one of Toyota’s bets in the used car market. The automaker maintains certification programsseasonal promotions and financing with reduced rates, strengthening the model’s presence in resale.

Advertising campaigns highlight its mechanical resilience, a factor constantly praised by owners.

Curiosities That Helped Shape the Reputation of the Etios in Brazil

  • The name “Etios” comes from the Greek ethos, meaning “character” or “personality”;
  • The model had special editions, such as the Etios Cross, with a more adventurous look;
  • The suspension was specifically developed for Brazilian roads, reducing noise and improving shock absorption;
  • The car was exported to several countries in South America.

Even when out of production, the Toyota Etios continues to be a smart choice for Brazilian drivers and remains one of the best options for purchasing used cars in Brazil. Combining affordable pricebrand reliabilitygood engine performance and low maintenance costs, it remains attractive for those seeking economy without sacrificing quality.
