The Partnership Established Between Porto do Açu Operações and Norsul Enables Maritime Transportation of Cargo in the “Short Distance” Modality Between Ports in the Southeast
The Navigation Company Norsul and Porto do Açu Operações have begun operating a new short-distance maritime transportation service for containers and project cargo between the Brazilian ports in the Southeast, which promises to integrate the region with regional and international trade routes. The information was provided by Porto do Açu itself yesterday (15), through its official communication channels.

The established partnership is to integrate services in the “short distance” modality and cabotage between the ports of Rio and Açu. The navigation and logistics company transported 23 containers from TechnipFMC in the stretch via maritime convoy.
The cabotage service, in the short-distance modality, will have a transportation capacity of up to 350 units per trip, in addition to providing a sustainable value for operations with a significant reduction in pollutant emissions into the environment.

Four 24-meter suction sails that generate up to 7 times more lift than traditional sails have been installed on a Maersk oil tanker. The autonomous system can reduce consumption by up to 20% and is already recording savings of up to 5.4 tons of fuel per day at sea, with annual cuts potentially reaching thousands of tons on a single vessel.
“The operation highlights the high potential of Açu as a port hub. This is the kick-off for consolidating the venture as an option for the flow of incoming and outgoing cargo, on a regional and global scale”, said João Braz, Director of Terminals at Porto do Açu Operações.
Partnership Between Porto do Açu and Norsul Was Established in March This Year
In March 2020, the companies signed the contract to offer these services in national waters. The partnership makes it feasible to transport short-distance maritime units and project cargo between the Southeast, establishing an integrated network among companies in Northern Fluminense, Espírito Santo, and Minas Gerais, through the Porto do Açu Multicargo Terminal (T-MULT).
The prospect is that the use of ocean convoys will enable a reduction in logistics costs and road traffic, offering greater safety and predictability, as well as sustainability. The transportation service will have a capacity of up to 350 units per trip, with regular departures, capable of meeting regional demands and long-haul routes.
Maritime Service Is an Attractive and Competitive Logistic Alternative
“This agreement highlights our vision of the “feeder” service as a necessary and complementary instrument to large Brazilian cabotage, mainly due to its magnitude and distances. At Açu, we will prove the value of this logistic alternative, competitive and attractive to clients from different segments,” informed Marcelo Bacellar, Commercial and Marketing Director at Norsul.
Operating since 2014, Porto do Açu already handles cargo such as bulk solids, general cargo, iron ore, and oil. It has a strategic location in São João da Barra-RJ, containing 9 terminals, divided into offshore and onshore areas.
