“Thanks to this contract, Voltalia reaches 1.9 GW of successfully developed projects in our Serra Branca cluster. This new success highlights the quality of our wind and solar park, which attracts local utilities as well as international companies seeking to obtain clean energy. With an additional 0.5 GW of potential in Serra Branca and the development of our new 1 GW park in Canudos, along with other smaller sites, we are a leading renewable energy producer in Brazil. I am very proud of the Voltalia teams and thank them for their dedication, especially in the current context,” commented Sébastien Clerc, Chief Executive Officer of Voltalia.
260 MW Solar Power Plant In Partnership With Copel
Voltalia, in partnership with Copel, will build a 260 MW solar plant (SSM 3 to 6) and will also supply solar energy to Copel through a 14-year contract starting in 2023. The SSM 3 to 6 projects are expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2022, before the long-term power purchase agreements begin, with the early production sold in a short-term contract already signed with Copel.

Advancement in renewable energy: A R$ 150 million project launched by Petrobras and Finep aims to create state-of-the-art electrolyzers for green hydrogen, strengthening national research and preparing Brazil to compete in a billion-dollar energy market.

Illiterate or semi-literate grandmothers were trained to repair solar systems, open rural workshops, and light up homes that still depended on kerosene.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.

Africa has about 500,000 cell towers and most still burn diesel to operate, while companies rush to cover antennas with solar energy and avoid signal blackouts.
Some of the construction works for Copel’s power plant are expected to occur at the same time as solar farm SSM 1 and 2. By pooling resources for SSM 1 to 6, Voltalia will achieve significant economies of scale across all stages, with the same O&M team servicing both solar plants.
Solar Energy, A Competitive Energy Source
Clean energy now represents 0.5 GW at Voltalia’s 2.4 GW installations in Serra Branca, the largest wind and solar power park in the world.
The two energy sources are complementary, as the wind blows mainly at night in Serra Branca. This new contract with Copel demonstrates the attractiveness and competitiveness of solar energy, whose cost has dropped significantly: -82% between 2010 and 2019 (source IRENA).
Today, renewable energy represents 20% of Voltalia’s total installed capacity. The Company aims to further expand this technology in its three main regions, with an additional 1 GW of solar capacity already contracted.
