The Provisional Expansion of the New Draft for Cargo Ships is Part of the Growth Project for the Port of Recife to Ensure More Efficiency in Import and Export Operations with Large Vessels Over the Coming Months

In recent days, the Captaincy of the Ports of Pernambuco approved the start of operations with the new draft at the Port of Recife, located in the state of Pernambuco, and the complex has already begun receiving the first ships. Export and import activities can now include large vessels. As of this Thursday, (05/19), it is known that the port expects to secure the bidding for dredging to increase drafts in the coming months.

Provisional Expansion of the New Draft at the Port of Recife is Approved and Large Vessels Begin to Arrive for Import and Export Operations

This week began with a strong growth projection for the Port of Recife, and the Captaincy of the Ports of Pernambuco has allowed the docking of larger draft ships at berths 00, 03, 04, and 05 for 45 days. This decision was made to expand the capacity for large vessels to enter the location for export and import operations, aiming to ensure even greater growth of these activities at the complex.

Furthermore, the captaincy granted the release after the strong demand for docking larger draft vessels than initially planned for the Port of Recife. The main request for the provisional draft expansion came from Sindaçúcar, which is responsible for the Sugar Terminal (TA) of the Port of Recife, corresponding to berth 00. Thus, with the arrival of requests from this and other companies, the Captaincy of the Ports of Pernambuco decided to provisionally allow the draft increase for the arrival of even larger ships.

Sindaçúcar requested the draft expansion to 9.2 meters, aiming for the arrival of large sugar vessels, essential for the growth of export and import operations at the Port of Recife. Additionally, other companies operating at the port, handling fertilizers and wheat, were the ones requesting the release for berths 03, 04, and 05, which will be used for bulk solid operations over the next 45 days. Thus, these berths will operate with a draft of 10.5 meters, allowing large vessels in the coming days.

A Growth of Up to 25% in Export and Import Operations is Projected with the Authorization of the New Draft at the Complex

With the arrival of the new draft for the Port of Recife, José Divard de Oliveira, Commercial and Operations Director, commented on the projections for import and export operations and stated: “Barley malt and soda ash are cargoes that can see growth above 25%. This is because new players have already shown interest in investing in the Port of Recife to enhance the movement of these cargoes. Barley, for example, has a player that will set up a battery of silos to handle more cargo through Recife. A feasibility study has already been conducted, and within eight months, this project will be completed.”

In addition, the Port of Recife is also projecting an increase in the transport of fertilizers over the next 45 days. This is due to the recent restructuring of the international market concerning the supply of the product, following instability caused by the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine.

Finally, the report from the Captaincy of the Ports of Pernambuco disclosed the exact measures for the new draft at the Port of Recife, which ranged from berth 00 to 01, reaching 10 meters; from berth 02 to 06, reaching 11 meters; and from the stretch of berth 07 to 09, reaching eight meters.
