Military Freighter Is The Largest Aircraft Ever Produced By Embraer And The Portuguese Government Will Receive The First Aircraft In 2023
Embraer announced yesterday, Thursday (08/22), the signing of a contract to sell five KC-390 planes to the Portuguese government.
For the first time, the KC-390 military freighter is being negotiated for export; the aircraft is the largest unit ever produced at Embraer’s factories, and Portugal will receive the first plane in 2023 and the last one in 2027.
Embraer did not disclose the amounts received in the negotiation, but João Gomes Cravinho, the Minister of National Defense of Portugal, is said to have stated in early July that the contract, which also includes all post-sales support, exceeds 800 million euros.

The Portuguese government will give dual use to the freighter (military/civil), as it intends to use the aircraft for firefighting and to replace the C140 model in the country, which is at the end of its useful life.
The Aircraft
The KC-390 is the largest aircraft manufactured in Brazil, is being produced in series at Embraer’s factory in Gavião Peixoto (SP), and was certified by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) in 2018.
Initially, the aircraft was developed by Embraer to meet the needs of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), with 28 units being marketed in 2014, and the first delivery expected next month, with subsequent deliveries throughout the year. The FAB’s intention is to start operations with the aircraft by October.
The Brazilian freighter can transport large loads (up to 26 tons), as it has access via ramp, can reach a speed of 470 knots (870 km/h), and operates on unpaved or damaged runways while being refueled in mid-flight.
