International Recognition Places Jurerê Internacional at the Top of Urban Coastal Management in 2025, Following Technical Analysis by Experts from 11 Countries Who Assessed Over 200 Beaches Based on Environmental, Urban, and Governance Criteria.
Jurerê Internacional, in Florianópolis, was named in 2025 as the best urban beach in the Ibero-American world in a technical ranking of coastal management that evaluated over 200 destinations and assigned an index of 0.87 on a scale from zero to one.
The survey was conducted by CIF Playas in partnership with the Proplayas network and brought together 71 experts from 11 countries, who analyzed indicators related to recreation, conservation, environmental protection, and sanitation, as well as urban and governance factors.
How the International Coastal Management Ranking Works
Unlike lists based on popularity, the study claims to use a standardized methodology applied consistently, with parameters aimed at guiding public managers, researchers, and communities on coastal performance, without relying on open voting or promotional campaigns.

Amid the United States’ economic blockade, China delivers 15,000 tons of rice to Cuba as part of a 60,000-ton donation personally approved by Xi Jinping. The package includes 80 million dollars and solar panels for hospitals.

For around 200 reais, anyone can buy a kit and have a chip implanted between their fingers to replace cards, keys, badges, and even medical information in case of a hospital emergency.

A 600-meter hill in the interior of Santa Catarina hides a volcanic past of almost 600 million years. The Morro do Garrafão in Corupá may have been an ancient extinct volcano, and science now confirms what the residents have always suspected.

Family has lived for over 50 years without electricity and running water at home in the South of Minas, 10 minutes from the city, improvising light, bath, and water while facing a lack of basic resources and awaiting property regularization.
In practice, the assessment considers items such as water quality, accessibility, safety, public infrastructure, and services along the shoreline, combining environmental and urban elements to estimate a beach’s capacity to support recreational use with sanitary control.
Also under consideration are aspects of management and standardization of temporary structures on the sand, presence of interconnected boardwalks, and continuous bike lanes, availability of leisure areas, and monitoring routines, factors identified as differentials in Jurerê’s performance.
Factors That Ensured Jurerê Internacional’s Leadership
Among the highlighted points in the result is the regular monitoring of water quality, in addition to conditions for movement and stay on the shore, which include connected boardwalks and sections with bike lanes, weighing in on accessibility and public use criteria.
Although the final index synthesizes various indicators, the ranking associates the high score with a set of operational factors, such as available infrastructure, services, and organization of the coastal space, which help reduce use conflicts and enhance the urban environment.
Another element mentioned in various reports about the study is the reference to recent coastal adaptation interventions, with beach widening works treated as a response to erosion processes and pressure from intensive use in urbanized areas.
In the case of Jurerê, information released about the expansion indicates an intervention covering the beach area and involving sand replenishment, within a set of municipal and state actions aimed at coastal requalification in Florianópolis.
Other Beaches in Florianópolis Among the Best Rated
In addition to Jurerê Internacional, other beaches in Florianópolis were cited in the survey in distinct categories, with Lagoinha do Leste standing out among natural beach highlights and Praia do Moçambique appearing among the best-rated in the corresponding segment.
These classifications, according to the ranking’s own disclosures across different channels, vary based on beach typologies and criteria associated with the level of urbanization, which avoids directly comparing areas with high human intervention to sections with more restricted conservation.
Still, the result reinforces the presence of Santa Catarina among the national highlights of the survey, which listed dozens of evaluated Brazilian beaches and indicated a concentration of well-ranked destinations in the state, alongside Rio de Janeiro and Bahia.
What the Ranking Measures and What Is Omitted from Evaluation
Although often reported as an “award,” the ranking presents itself as a technical instrument aimed at establishing comparable parameters for coastal management, focusing on indicators rather than subjective attractiveness, tourist flow, or reputation on social media.
On the other hand, the very description of the topic reminds that urban coastal areas deal with ongoing challenges, such as tourist seasonality, continuous need for environmental maintenance, and typical pressures of valued territories, without the good placement eliminating these issues.
The leadership of Jurerê Internacional, therefore, reflects the neighborhood’s performance on the criteria analyzed by experts and the combination of monitoring, infrastructure, and organization of the beach space, within the set of 200 destinations observed in the 2025 edition.
