- Day: Monday, 10/19, 9:30 AM
- Location: Pilots’ Association Headquarters, in front of the Pilots’ Bridge, at Ponta da Praia
- Participants: Carlos Alberto de Souza Filho, President of the São Paulo Pilots Association; Pilots Marcio Santos Teixeira and Fábio Rodrigues Alves de Abreu, winners of the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea from the International Maritime Organization.
The IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, considered the highest global recognition, was awarded by the International Maritime Organization, among 31 competitors, to pilots Marcio Santos Teixeira and Fábio Rodrigues Alves de Abreu, members of São Paulo Pilots, nominated by Brazil, for their determination, professionalism, and expertise in ship handling demonstrated during an emergency caused by extreme weather conditions while operating two oil tankers loaded with oil at the Almirante Barroso Terminal, in the Port of São Sebastião, in April 2019. This is the second time that Brazilians have been nominated for the award. The award will be presented at the IMO headquarters in London on a date to be determined.
As a result of the courageous actions of pilots Marcio and Abreu, no more lives were lost, serious damage to dock structures and oil facilities was avoided, and a major marine pollution incident was prevented.
