Old Pieces From The French Brand Reach R$ 400 and Become Objects of Desire Among Collectors in Brazil
The Duralex plate, famous in the 1970s to 1990s for its almost legendary durability, has stopped being just a common household item. Today, it has become a luxury item. Some original units can cost up to R$ 400 each, turning what was synonymous with simplicity into a rare object, valued by collectors and vintage design enthusiasts.
The appreciation is directly linked to the scarcity of production, family nostalgia, and the unique resilience that made them popular. On online sales platforms and specialized thrift stores, the most classic models, especially the amber or smoky ones, are sought after by those who grew up seeing these plates at their grandmother’s house and now want to recover this emotional symbol.
Why Did the Duralex Plate Become So Expensive?

Manufactured by the French company Duralex since 1945, the plates arrived in Brazil in the following decades and became popular due to their sturdiness: they were practically unbreakable, stackable, and had a clean design that matched any environment. Over the years, mass production has been reduced, especially after financial crises faced by the factory in France.

The brand almost ceased operations in 2020, when it entered judicial recovery, which further contributed to making older models rare items. Additionally, as noted by the newspaper Exame, the emotional appeal is one of the main factors explaining the current demand for these pieces.
“A well-preserved Duralex plate is not only durable; it is childhood memory, a symbol of a time, and that has a lot of value,” explains vintage utensil restorer Larissa Cavalcanti.
How to Know if Your Duralex Plate is Worth Money?
There are some criteria that help identify valued specimens:
- Original logo stamped on the back, with the inscription “Duralex – Made in France”;
- Classic colors, such as amber (brown), smoky (gray), and olive green;
- Absence of chips or cracks, which ensure higher resale value;
- Older models with characteristic relief on the edges.
Platforms like OLX, Shopee, Mercado Livre, and even Instagram have specialized pages for reselling these plates. Prices vary according to rarity, condition, and model, but even more common pieces can yield between R$ 80 and R$ 200 each.
Is It Still Worth Keeping a Duralex at Home?

Yes. Besides the emotional value, many of these plates have become true collectibles and home investments. And it’s not just Duralex: the phenomenon of appreciating everyday objects also affects old sour cream glasses, enamel cutlery, and cast iron pots.
In times of high demand for authenticity, durable design, and history, the Duralex plate consolidates itself as an emotional symbol that has become luxury and that, without you knowing, could be hidden at the back of your dish cabinet.
