Discover What’s Behind the Rise in Fuel Prices, Where Prices Have Increased the Most, and How to Save in This Scenario

Fuel prices have risen again in Brazil, directly impacting drivers’ wallets. According to the latest Edenred Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL), gasoline showed an increase of 0.48%, reaching R$ 6.29 per liter. At the same time, ethanol also recorded a rise of 0.95%, reaching R$ 4.26. This increase interrupts a three-month period of stability. On the other hand, factors such as high logistical costs, seasonal demand at the end of the year, and limited infrastructure in some regions explain this scenario. According to Douglas Pina, General Director of Mobility at Edenred Brazil, these elements together form the main reason for the increases.

Regions with Highest Prices: North and Northeast in the Lead

In early December, the North of Brazil recorded the highest prices among the regions, indicating a strong impact in the area. While gasoline reached R$ 6.81 with an increase of 0.29%, ethanol was sold at R$ 4.98, rising 0.20%. Meanwhile, the Central-West was the only region that saw a decrease in gasoline prices, with a reduction of 0.16%. Nevertheless, the region was not free from increases as ethanol rose by 1.46%, reaching R$ 4.18. In the Northeast, gasoline led the regional increases, registering a rise of 1.26%, which follows the national growth trend.

Highlights by State: Bahia and Acre Pull Up the Increases

Bahia was the state with the highest increase in gasoline prices in December. With a growth of 2.72%, the fuel reached R$ 6.42. Meanwhile, the Federal District had the largest decrease in price, with a reduction of 4.09%, bringing gasoline down to R$ 6.10. However, Acre continued to record the highest price in Brazil, reaching R$ 7.38, despite a slight decrease of 0.40%. Ethanol also followed a similar trend, with Bahia registering the highest increase of 3.17%, reaching R$ 4.56. In contrast, Pernambuco had the largest drop in ethanol prices, with a reduction of 2.37%, resulting in a price of R$ 4.53.

Why Did Prices Rise This Month?

The increases recorded in fuel prices during December can be attributed to a set of factors. Firstly, logistical costs rose significantly, especially due to poor infrastructure and the distances traveled between distribution centers and more remote areas. Additionally, high seasonal demand, common at year-end, boosted consumption, both in freight transportation and travel. Finally, fluctuations in the international oil market also had a direct impact on prices in Brazil, making increases in final prices inevitable.

Ethanol Pays Off: Economy and Sustainability

Even with the increases recorded in December, ethanol remains an attractive option for Brazilian drivers. Firstly, it continues to be cheaper than gasoline, which helps balance refueling costs. Secondly, it stands out as a more environmentally friendly alternative. By emitting fewer pollutants during combustion, ethanol directly contributes to sustainable mobility and helps reduce carbon emissions. For this reason, it has been the preferred choice for drivers looking to combine savings with environmental responsibility in their daily lives.

How to Reduce Fuel Consumption?

To mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices, drivers can adopt some simple, yet highly effective measures. Firstly, it is essential to research gas stations with the best prices using monitoring apps. Next, it is crucial to keep the car well-maintained, ensuring that tires are properly inflated and the engine is serviced, which significantly reduces consumption. Another recommended practice is to avoid sudden accelerations and braking, which can increase fuel consumption by up to 20%. Finally, opting for ethanol is an excellent choice when the price per liter is up to 70% of the gasoline price, providing greater savings.

High Prices Demand Smart Alternatives

Fuel prices continue to rise in Brazil, with gasoline exceeding R$ 6.00 and ethanol nearing R$ 5.00 in various regions. However, ethanol emerges as a viable alternative, providing both savings and sustainability. In this scenario, adopting more conscious habits and seeking efficient alternatives becomes essential to alleviate the impacts of frequent price increases. Therefore, measures such as choosing ethanol and practicing efficient driving are essential solutions for Brazilian drivers.

About the IPTL

The Edenred Ticket Log Price Index is a national survey that uses precise data obtained from refuelings conducted at over 21,000 accredited gas stations. Edenred manages over 1 million vehicles and performs, on average, 8 transactions per second, ensuring detailed and reliable information on fuel behavior throughout Brazil. This index thus consolidates itself as an essential source for tracking price dynamics in the national market.
