The Trajectory of Arlindo Anomalia and the Origin of the Nickname “Brazilian Popeye”
Born in Pernambuco, Arlindo Anomalia, nationally known as the “Brazilian Popeye,” gained notoriety on the internet around 2010 by displaying a visibly altered physique, which quickly drew public attention on social media. The comparison to the cartoon character arose mainly due to the disproportionate size of his biceps, which became his main trademark.
Since he was young, Arlindo regularly practiced weightlifting. However, over the years, he began to resort to the application of mineral oil on his body as a way to achieve a more extreme aesthetic result. This practice, although widely criticized by health experts, was the determining factor for the appearance that led him to fame. Nonetheless, Arlindo himself never hid the method he used to modify his body.
The information was initially disclosed by CNN Brasil, which provided details about the journey of the Pernambucan, from the beginning of his exposure on social media to the personal and financial impacts of the notoriety he gained. With the increase in visibility, the “Brazilian Popeye” began to accumulate followers and attract the attention of traditional media.

Fame on Social Media and Participation in Television Programs

With the image that went viral on the internet, Arlindo Anomalia began to be invited to participate in television programs, further expanding his national exposure. On social media, he gathered over 30 thousand followers, a significant number for someone outside the traditional circuit of digital influencers.
Despite this, as reported by a relative in an interview with CNN Brasil, fame did not translate into financial stability. Even after appearing on television, Arlindo continued to engage in simple activities to ensure his livelihood. He worked as a seller of mineral water and also did masonry work, balancing his work routine with the attention he received from the public.
According to reports from close associates, Arlindo was known in the community as a “good guy, helpful and very dear.” This perception contrasted with the caricatured image often associated with him on social media, reinforcing the human aspect behind the figure that went viral on the internet.
From Health Deterioration to Death at 55
In mid-October 2025, Arlindo Anomalia faced a serious health problem when he suffered a urinary tract infection. Over time, the situation worsened, requiring hospitalization. Approximately a month later, his kidneys stopped functioning, leading to the need for intubation and intensive care in the ICU.
Arlindo’s death occurred at the age of 55 and was confirmed through a condolence note published on a social media profile that tracked his journey. According to a relative, the cause of death was related to complications arising from his weakened state of health in the final months.
The death of the “Brazilian Popeye” reignited debates on social media about the risks of using substances like mineral oil for aesthetic purposes, as well as raising reflections on the limits of the pursuit of visibility on the internet and the physical and emotional consequences of prolonged exposure.
