With Announcement for 2025, São Martinho, One of the Largest Companies in the Sugar-Energy Sector in Brazil, Invests in Plant That Promises to Transform Vinasse into Renewable Energy
According to the Magazine O Empreiteiro, São Martinho, one of the largest companies in the sugar-energy sector in Brazil, is about to make a significant leap in the renewable energy market. With a robust investment of approximately R$ 250 million, the company is preparing to inaugurate its first biogas plant in Américo Brasiliense, in the interior of São Paulo. The goal? To produce around 15 million cubic meters of biogas per harvest, an achievement that will significantly contribute to the energy transition in the country.
The production of biogas will be a milestone in the use of sustainable technologies and renewable energy, as it is generated through the biodigestion of vinasse, a waste product from ethanol production. This process is innovative, as it will allow São Martinho to fully leverage the potential of biogas generation from vinasse, a previously underutilized source. In addition, this initiative is an example of how the sugar-energy sector can play a fundamental role in producing clean energies, helping to combat greenhouse gas emissions and reducing dependence on fossil natural gas.
Biogas – A Sustainable Alternative to Natural Gas
The biogas plant at São Martinho is not only an innovation in the renewable energy sector but also an ambitious strategy to enter the market for renewable natural gas. The biogas produced by the company has the capacity to replace fossil gas, providing a cleaner and more sustainable alternative. This not only meets the growing needs of a region with high fossil fuel consumption but also positions São Martinho as a leader in the transition to cleaner and renewable energy sources.

São Martinho’s biogas production will start with 20% of its potential, connecting to the distribution system via gas pipeline. This will allow the company to offer a renewable alternative to customers in the region of Araraquara, in the northeast of São Paulo. The ability to supply pressurized biogas or injected through the natural gas distribution network is a significant step toward a greener and more sustainable future.
Positive Environmental Impact and Strategic Partnerships
In addition to its commitment to producing biogas, São Martinho also demonstrates its commitment to environmental sustainability. With the operation of the biogas plant, the company estimates it will avoid the emission of up to 32,000 tons of equivalent greenhouse gases. This is a notable milestone in reducing carbon emissions and contributes to the global fight against climate change.
To make this project a reality, São Martinho relies on strategic partnerships. The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), through the BNDES Climate Fund program, and the Financing Agency for Studies and Projects (FINEP) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations provided the necessary funding for this ambitious project. These partnerships demonstrate the public sector’s commitment to supporting renewable energy initiatives, such as the popularization of natural gas and technological innovation.
São Martinho is preparing for a significant transformation in the renewable energy landscape with the construction of its biogas plant. This massive investment will not only open new opportunities for biogas production and commercialization but will also have a positive environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With strategic partnerships and an unwavering commitment to sustainability, São Martinho is on the right track to lead the energy transition in Brazil and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future. The energy of the future is biogas, and São Martinho is ready to lead the way.
