Both Companies That Signed The Agreement Are Aiming To Produce 77 Megawatts Of Renewable Energy, Starting In July 2024
A AES Brasil (AESB3) announced on Thursday a historic agreement with Microsoft, consolidating a long-term renewable energy contract valued at R$ 1 billion. This contract marks a unique partnership between the two companies in Brazil and represents a significant step in expanding the supply of clean energy in the country, according to Infomoney.
With a duration of 15 years, Microsoft’s contract provides for the supply of 77 megawatts (MWm) of energy starting in July 2024. This energy will be generated at a wind farm with an installed capacity of 154 MW, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
Expanded Global Partnership For Renewable Energy
This collaboration extends an existing global relationship between AES and Microsoft, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. The project is being developed at the Cajuína Wind Complex, located in Rio Grande do Norte, where AES has other strategic partners, such as BRF (BRFS3) and Unipar (UNIP6).

Fortescue announces a radical shift by replacing diesel with a system featuring 1.2 GW of solar energy, 600 MW of wind energy, and up to 5 GWh in batteries, a giant project that could save $100 million per year and transform heavy mining into one of the largest 100% renewable operations in the world by 2028.
The renewable energy partnership between AES Brasil and Microsoft aims to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 28,700 tons. This environmental commitment is an integral part of efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability.
Cajuína Wind Complex And Its Energy Potential
The Cajuína Wind Complex represents AES Brasil’s third project in Rio Grande do Norte and is located in the Central Cabugi region. With an estimated total installed capacity of over 1.4 gigawatts (GW), of which 684 MW is already under construction, this energy complex is a key piece in the transition to clean energy sources. Construction started in 2022, and the complex is expected to begin operating in the second half of this year.
This partnership not only drives the expansion of renewable energy generation capacity in Brazil, but also reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to achieving its sustainability and carbon neutrality goals. The company has been actively seeking partnerships with clean energy suppliers around the world to power its operations with renewable energy.
A Step Toward A Sustainable Future
The contract between AES Brasil and Microsoft demonstrates the growing commitment of companies to sustainable practices and the transition to a cleaner energy matrix. Additionally, it strengthens Brazil’s role as an important player in adopting renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The announcement of this long-term renewable energy agreement reaffirms AES Brasil and Microsoft’s commitment to the construction of a more sustainable and green future, aligned with global efforts to combat climate change and preserve the environment for future generations. The partnership between these two giants represents an important milestone in the transition to a low-carbon economy in Brazil.
