Renault Announces Creation of Ampere, Subsidiary of the Automaker That Will Be Responsible for Producing Affordable Electric Vehicles to ‘Democratize the Sector’

Renault announced the launch of the Ampere division, which aims to democratize the electric car market by offering models at more affordable prices, around R$ 100 thousand. This strategy was formalized during the Capital Market Day, with the division’s president, Luca de Melo, revealing ambitious plans for the future.

The new Ampere division will have 11,000 employees, mainly in the engineering department, and plans to develop and produce up to 400,000 cars per year between 2024 and 2027, with the expectation of increasing to 620,000 electric vehicles by 2028.

Renault’s strategy is to launch models with prices equivalent to combustion cars, aiming to democratize the electric car market. To achieve this goal, the company intends to invest in the AmpR Small platform for B-segment cars, and in the AmpR Medium, aimed at C-segment models.

B-segment cars include utility vehicles measuring between 3.60 and 3.90 meters, such as the Peugeot 208, while C-segment cars measure between 4 and 4.30 meters, like the Volkswagen Golf.

The first electric model produced by Ampere will be the Legend, which will be compact, launched in 2026 and costing less than 20,000 euros, approximately R$ 100 thousand. Renault plans to gradually expand its lineup, with the ambitious goal of having seven new electric cars on the streets by 2031, aiming to sell 1 million cars that year and capture 10% of the global electric vehicle market.
