The VW Gol G5, one of the most popular cars from Volkswagen, has regained public attention over the past year, standing out in the ranking of best-selling cars by surpassing the Chevrolet Onix. Its arrival is particularly timely, as it meets the growing demand from Brazilians for more affordable options in the automotive market, offering a viable alternative for those looking to have a car in the garage.
VW Gol G5 Sold 62,363 Units Last October
With prices around R$ 30 thousand, the VW Gol G5 has been around for 16 years and has undergone several facelifts, outperforming the Onix in sales. The model arrived in 2008 with a unique finish, featuring a body with uniform gaps and an interior with well-fitted plastics.
From it, several other versions of the model emerged, securing the top spot in the list of most sold used cars of the year. According to data from Car Blog, the model outperformed successful used cars like the Fiat Palio, in 2nd, Fiat Uno, in 3rd, and the Onix from Chevrolet, in 4th.

The cumulative figure for 2023, with data up to October, already totals 8,727,536 light commercial vehicles sold, marking a growth of 4.47% compared to the same accumulated period last year. The VW Gol G5 accounted for 62,363 units sold, growing 3.4% over October. However, there are certain points that must be considered, as the rival of the Onix has some sensitive issues regarding its engine.
The 1.0 VHT engine has shown lubrication problems. In extreme cases, the block was replaced with another one with a different serial number still under warranty, but without the mandatory correction in the car’s paperwork with the competent authorities. Therefore, always check the serial number.
Points to Observe Before Buying The VW Gol G5
There are also reports of other issues in the rival of the Onix, such as in the transmission, air conditioning, infiltration, wheel bearings, and also in the I-System. With Gol prices starting from R$ 24,591 and reaching R$ 34,287, there are some details to note before purchasing this vehicle.
First, it is essential to consider the version, as each one has its own characteristics and prices, making it crucial to choose the version that best meets your needs.
The car’s mileage is a key factor to consider, as it indicates the wear and tear of the vehicle. High-mileage cars do not necessarily show mechanical problems earlier.
The condition of the vehicle is another point to consider. Cars in good condition are safer and, of course, present fewer mechanical issues. A good parameter to know if a car has been well cared for is to check if it has undergone all necessary maintenance.
History of The Onix Rival in Brazil
The VW Gol G5 was launched in 2008 with the mission of becoming Brazil’s favorite and finally bringing the Gol and its derivatives into the 21st century.
Although only 3 generations were developed by the brand, the market doesn’t hold back, and with each facelift, the model is considered a new generation, so the Gol made between 2008 and 2012 is generally referred to as the Gol G5.
Until mid-2012, the Gol only had a 4-door body, thus gaining a 3-door variant which gave it a sporty feel, and according to some sites and magazines of the time, an Audi A1 style.
