The innovation behind the plastic brick

Fuplastic, a pioneering company in sustainable solutions for civil construction, developed this innovative technology that allows the construction of properties using bricks made entirely from recycled plastic. This approach not only reduces plastic waste, which is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet, but also offers fast and efficient construction through a click-together method that eliminates the need for mortar.

According to Bruno Frederico, CEO of Fuplastic and the mind behind this creation, each 50m² construction with recycled plastic bricks contributes to the removal of approximately 2,5 tons of plastic from the environment. Furthermore, the modular nature of the bricks allows for flexibility in construction, especially in limited areas, such as favelas, where the NGO TETO Brasil has used this technology in emergency affordable housing projects.

The thermal comfort of plastic bricks

One of the most impressive aspects of plastic brick is its potential to improve thermal comfort within buildings. Unlike traditional clay bricks, plastic bricks have an internal “empty space”, allowing air circulation that helps maintain more pleasant internal temperatures. This feature is particularly valuable in a climate change scenario, where heat waves become more frequent and intense.

Bruno Frederico highlights that studies have already proven this increase in thermal comfort, thanks to the bricks’ ability to “breathe”. Hot air tends to rise and exit through the holes in the blocks, a simple but effective mechanism for maintaining a cooler and more pleasant environment.

Challenges and Considerations in Construction with Plastic Brick

However, as Professor Mauricio Resende, a specialist in Civil Engineering at the Fundação Educacional Inaciana (FEI), points out, the thermal performance of a building does not just depend on the material of the bricks. Factors such as architectural design, roofing, natural ventilation and the presence of eaves also play crucial roles. This highlights the importance of a holistic approach to sustainable building design.

Furthermore, the issue of fire safety arises due to the flammable nature of plastic. It is essential that plastic bricks undergo rigorous ignitability and fire resistance tests to ensure their viability as a construction material. According to Fuplastic, the bricks have certifications that attest to their quality and safety, paving the way for their wider adoption in construction.

A Vision for the Future: Sustainable and Affordable Housing

The implementation of plastic bricks in civil construction is more than a technological innovation; it is a step towards a more sustainable and inclusive future.
