The first VIAMAR tender includes a connection between Itajaí, Luiz Alves, and Navegantes, with a planned completion time of 42 months. The complete project will have five lots, three lanes per direction, and a route parallel to BR-101, serving a region marked by the flow of trucks, ports, tourists, and travel between municipalities.

On Wednesday, June 24, Santa Catarina launched the tender for the first lot of VIAMAR, a road project that aims to create an alternative to BR-101 and connect Greater Florianópolis to the north of the state. The initial stretch will be 25.7 kilometers and have an estimated investment of R$ 2.2 billion.

Lot 4 will be between SC-486, in Itajaí, and SC-414, in the stretch between Luiz Alves and Navegantes. The proposal is to start a new connection parallel to BR-101, currently pressured by the intense flow of vehicles and cargo.

Governor Jorginho Mello presented the tender this Wednesday, 24, classifying the launch as the beginning of a new phase for Santa Catarina’s infrastructure. He highlighted that VIAMAR was planned to improve circulation, reduce queues, and facilitate the transport of production.

First lot of the highway will have bridges and viaducts

The segment outlined in the tender will include four bridges, four viaducts, and three containment works. The route will also cross BR-470 and SC-412, known as Jorge Lacerda Highway, increasing the complexity of execution.

With the publication of the tender, the 90-day period for receiving proposals has begun. The government has informed that documents are expected to be received on September 21, before selecting the company responsible for the work.

The bidding will be integrated. In this model, the subsequent stages necessary to start the work will be the responsibility of the winner of the tender. The indicated completion time for the lot is 42 months.

The Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Mobility, Ricardo Grando, stated that the work represents a milestone for Santa Catarina and the South of the country. He cited the overloaded situation of BR-101 as one of the reasons for the project.

The project aims to alleviate traffic in the North Coast, efficiently channel port production, and reduce travel time between municipalities.

VIAMAR seeks to alleviate bottlenecks in the North Coast

The new highway will have a route parallel to BR-101 and was designed to tackle the logistical bottlenecks of the North Coast. The region hosts significant economic activity, a large circulation of trucks linked to the ports, and a constant flow of tourists and visitors.

The objectives presented include alleviating traffic, making the port production flow more efficient, and reducing travel time between the municipalities served by the connection.

The president of the Federation of Freight Transport Companies of Santa Catarina, Dagnor Schneider, stated that the transport sector and the productive sector recognize the importance of the initiative. For him, the tender represents the first step of a journey.

The vice-governor Marilisa Boehm classified the launch as a historic milestone. During the event, she emphasized that VIAMAR was awaited by the people of Santa Catarina and should be remembered for the scale of the planned intervention.

Complete project will have 145 kilometers

When completed, VIAMAR is expected to total 145 kilometers, connecting the Greater Florianópolis Ring Road to Joinville. The project foresees five lots and a total investment exceeding R$ 7 billion.

The highway will have three lanes in each direction, a maximum speed of 120 km/h, and service standard class 0. This classification foresees a low number of intersections and accesses, prioritizing express traffic along the corridor.

The first section will start in Itajaí and involve the connection with Luiz Alves and Navegantes. The choice of lot 4 marks the beginning of the execution of a larger project, planned to cross one of the busiest areas in the state.

The mayor of Itajaí and president of the Association of Municipalities of the Itajaí River Mouth, Robson Coelho, said that the work will be financed with Santa Catarina’s own resources. He highlighted the expected effects on cargo, safety, mobility, and jobs.

The state administration presents VIAMAR as a response to the dependence on BR-101 on the Santa Catarina coast. The intention is to create additional circulation capacity in a region marked by port transport, municipal displacements, and tourist trips throughout the year.

The open call for the initial lot will still go through the receipt and analysis of proposals, definition of the winner, and preparatory stages before the start of construction. The 42-month schedule will be applied after the contracting and advancement of the planned process.

The importance of this type of investment

This type of road infrastructure is important because it reduces costs, improves the circulation of goods, and increases business efficiency. In regions with ports, industries, and strong tourist movement, a new connection can decrease queues, delays, and waste in transportation.

When trucks spend less time stopped, companies spend less on fuel, maintenance, work hours, and storage. This helps make products more competitive and improves the flow of goods to ports, distribution centers, and consumer markets.

Another effect is the attraction of investments. Regions with fast, safe, and predictable access tend to be more attractive for the installation of factories, transport companies, logistics centers, commerce, and services. During construction, there is also demand for workers, machines, materials, and suppliers.

VIAMAR draws attention for its size, cost, and proposal to reorganize mobility between Florianópolis and Joinville. In your assessment, could the new highway reduce pressure on the BR-101 and improve freight transport? Leave your opinion in the comments.
