SBT Faces Serious Financial Crisis with Mass Layoffs and Drastic Production Cuts. The Network Struggles to Remain Relevant.
The death of Silvio Santos left a huge gap in SBT, but no one could have predicted that the impact would be so great.
The channel, which has always been synonymous with family entertainment, now faces one of the biggest crises in its history.
The mass layoff of employees raised serious questions about the future of the network that for years was the pride of the Abravanel family. But what is really happening behind the scenes?

The most popular presenter of SBT transformed decades of earnings into 19 farms, 50,000 cattle, and the fifth best-selling coffee brand in Brazil, while most fans thought he only understood batons and DNA tests.

Layoffs to Save SBT?
Since the launch of its new programming in the first half of 2024, SBT has been undergoing a financial restructuring process.
According to information from the TV Pop portal, the network decided to drastically cut costs to minimize the high investments made recently.
Last Monday (16), a wave of layoffs swept through the channel, affecting several sectors and making it clear that the crisis is deeper than it seems.
Among the most affected departments, the SBT journalism team and the Chega Mais program, which debuted only six months ago, stand out.
The measure aims to reduce the operational losses that have been a constant in recent times.
According to internal sources, the channel needed to take drastic actions, from basic cost cuts like office supplies to laying off essential contributors to productions.
Impact on Productions and Popular Programs
The Chega Mais program is one of the most affected, with projections that a good part of its team will be laid off.
This includes about 10 professionals, many of whom were reassigned from other programs, such as the traditional Eliana (2009-2024).
The situation also affected other attractions, such as Tá Na Hora and Circo do Tirú, which underwent significant cuts.
There are also doubts about the future of É Tudo Nosso, a program that still has no guarantees of renewal for 2025.
The uncertainty has spread throughout the channel, leaving many contributors concerned about the possibility of losing their jobs.
According to TV Pop, SBT’s financial crisis has reached alarming proportions, necessitating a complete reassessment of its programming schedule and audience strategies.
Journalism in Decline
The journalism sector was one of the most affected, with five professionals recently laid off. The area, which had already been struggling with shrinking resources, now faces even greater challenges.
SBT had announced a series of new programs at the beginning of the year, but few have managed to achieve the expected success. Many of these projects, launched with high expectations, did not thrive, forcing the network to drastically reduce costs.
However, not everything was cut. Only two programs were spared from layoffs: The Noite com Danilo Gentili and Sabadou com Virginia. Both attractions have been true assets for the channel, securing the runner-up position in viewership and bringing significant profits.
These programs remain safe bets for SBT, which seeks to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive TV market.
SBT Loses Ground in Audience Competition
Despite efforts to stay competitive, SBT has been losing ground in the race for viewership.
The network, which once fought for the runner-up position, now sees most of its programs occupying third place in viewer preferences.
Sabadou com Virginia is the exception, achieving second place in audience, but other attractions have not reached the expected performance.
Sundays, however, continue to be the highlight of the programming. The classic Domingo Legal, with its 7 hours on air, remains undefeated in the runner-up position, while the Programa Silvio Santos, now hosted by Patricia Abravanel, occasionally competes for first place.
Still, these occasional successes have not been enough to reverse the overall crisis.
Silvio Santos’ Legacy Under Threat?
The death of Silvio Santos marked the end of an era and left many questioning whether SBT will be able to maintain its legacy without the charismatic founder.
The financial challenges, combined with constant changes in programming, put the future of the network at risk.
Even with some islands of success, like The Noite and Domingo Legal, the feeling behind the scenes is that SBT is far from emerging from this crisis unscathed.
Will the network be able to reinvent itself and uphold Silvio Santos’ legacy, or are we witnessing the decline of one of the greatest references in Brazilian TV? Share your opinion in the comments!
