The recycling station sold four books to Zhang for just six yuan, equivalent to about 85 cents.
Later, upon further analyzing the materials, the enthusiast realized that the books contained confidential information from the Chinese State. Concerned about the seriousness of the situation, he immediately called the authorities’ hotline and handed over the documents.
The Response Of The Authorities
The Ministry of State Security of China published a message on social media to praise Zhang’s actions.
In the statement, it was highlighted that the situation could have been “unimaginable” if the documents had fallen into the hands of ill-intentioned individuals.
After the alert, a special unit was sent to the recycling center to investigate how classified documents ended up in regular trash.
The authorities discovered that two military employees, responsible for destroying over 200 secret books, sold the material as recyclable paper for 20 yuan, approximately US$ 2.75.
Investigation And Measures Taken
With the recovery operation organized by the government, all sold books were located and retrieved. The authorities stated that the failure was corrected, eliminating the security breach. However, the fate of the two employees responsible for the sale of the documents has not been disclosed to date.
The episode drew attention on Chinese social media, sparking debates about the importance of security in the management of sensitive materials.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the Ministry reinforced the importance of citizens like Zhang, who actively collaborate to protect the country’s interests.
The story also raised questions about the protocols for disposing of classified documents in Chinese military institutions.
