Many Jobs for Bahia! Siemens Signs Billion Dollar Contract to Install 70 Turbines at the Santo Agostinho Wind Farm – RN, from French Engie
Good news for Bahia, Siemens Gamesa (SG) took advantage of the recovery of the renewable market in Brazil and secured its second major contract in the country in two months. The Siemens subsidiary will supply the French company Engie with 70 turbines of the 5.X model, which will be built at its factory in Camaçari – BA and can generate many jobs in the region. SG’s first contract in Brazil was for the 312 MW Tucano Wind Farm signed in April 2020.

The equipment will be implemented at the Santo Agostinho wind farm, located in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The energy complex will be able to generate 434 MW.
The 5.X platform achieves one of the highest powers in the onshore wind segment thanks to its large rotors. The combination of these factors allows it to achieve “one of the most competitive energy costs in the market,” according to sources from Siemens.

Every time a river flows into the sea, an amount of energy equivalent to a 120-meter waterfall is silently wasted, but Japan has just inaugurated the world’s first power plant that captures this waste and transforms it into electricity 24 hours a day without sun, wind, or fuel.

Canadian engineers want to compress air in underground caverns and build plants of up to 500 MW that function as giant lungs to store renewable energy for hours and stabilize entire electrical grids.
The renewable group, which has an industrial implementation in Brazil, is soon gaining another major contract in this market. In December, it closed a supply contract for an additional 465 MW.
Both this project and Engie’s project, the energy produced will be sold through two power purchase agreements (PPAs) and highlight the growth of wind energy in Brazil, despite the lack of renewable energy auctions in the country in 2020.
PPAs provide a way for corporations to lock in an energy price and provide stability to their energy costs in the medium term, at competitive prices compared to spot price forecasts.
Turbine Manufacturing Will Be at Siemens’ Factory in Bahia and May Generate Jobs in the Region
“This agreement highlights how attractive the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform is becoming globally, and we are pleased to continue developing a close partnership with Engie in Brazil. Furthermore, the country is truly becoming a beacon for wind energy in Latin America,” said Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s Onshore business, a system that sets prices and provides stability for operators, who should not have to focus on market price fluctuations.
Siemens adds contracts of 1.21 GW in Brazil with the 5.X turbine. Globally, there are 2.2 GW with the same model. A very significant volume in this industry and achieved in less than two years since the commercial launch of the wind turbine.
And most importantly, Siemens Gamesa will build the new turbines in Brazil, at its factory in Camacari, in the State of Bahia, and can generate jobs in the region. Brazil ranks seventh in the wind energy market in the world, with 17 GW of installed capacity.
