With durable mechanics, automatic transmission, and compact size, the Kia Picanto emerges as an option near R$ 50,000 for those who drive in the city. The model combines economy, good construction, and structural safety, but its limited performance requires caution on trips, overtaking, and longer road journeys with load.

The durable mechanics of the Kia Picanto have once again caught attention in the used car market in Brazil, especially among drivers looking for a small, automatic, and economical car for around R$ 50,000. The evaluated model, year 2014/2015, appears as an alternative for urban use, with 83,000 km and a clear focus on practicality.

In a video published by the channel Opinião Sincera, the test shows that the Picanto makes more sense for those who drive in cities like São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, and Curitiba, where heavy traffic, tight parking spaces, and short commutes favor compact cars. The weak point appears when the routine requires highway driving, frequent overtaking, or trips with load and urgency.

Kia Picanto bets on small size and urban use

With 3.60 meters in length, 1.49 meters in height, and about 1.60 meters in width, the Kia Picanto is a car designed to make life easier in large urban centers. It takes up little space, parks more easily, and moves better in narrow and congested streets.

This proposal explains why the model still attracts attention among used cars. The Picanto does not try to be a large family car, nor a sporty performance hatch; it bets on urban efficiency, correct construction, and durable mechanics for those who need practicality in daily life.

Durable mechanics is the model’s main argument

The 1.0 three-cylinder engine from the K family is one of the main points mentioned in the evaluation. It delivers 77 horsepower with gasoline and 80 horsepower with ethanol, with a torque of 9.6 kgfm on gasoline and 10 kgfm on ethanol. It is not a strong set, but it is known for its robustness.

The presence of a timing chain also weighs in favor of the car. Unlike engines that require periodic belt changes, the chain system reduces concerns when basic maintenance is done correctly. The Picanto’s robust mechanics depend on timely oil, filters, and inspections, not on severe use or improvisation.

Automatic transmission helps in the city, but does not transform performance

One of the attractions of the Kia Picanto is the four-speed automatic transmission. At the time the model arrived on the Brazilian market, many entry-level cars still used automated single-clutch transmissions, known for less smooth operation and more problematic maintenance.

In the Picanto, the automatic transmission is simple and robust, but requires preventive maintenance. Changing the transmission oil at appropriate intervals is essential to avoid headaches. It provides comfort in city stop-and-go traffic, but doesn’t perform miracles when the driver demands quick acceleration.

Limited performance requires patience on the road

The test makes it clear that the Picanto is not a car for those who prioritize power in acceleration. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in about 17 seconds shows that the model has modest performance, especially in overtaking or uphill driving.

This does not make the car bad, but defines its ideal use. In the city, where almost no one can accelerate hard for long, the Picanto performs well; on the highway, it requires planning, safe distance, and patience. For those who travel every week, there are more suitable options.

Structural safety stands out as a differential among compacts

Another relevant point is the perception of a more solid construction compared to several popular models sold in Brazil at the same time. The Picanto was developed for more demanding markets and features a structure that conveys more confidence than its size suggests.

The model already offered dual airbags and ABS brakes before it was mandatory in Brazil. Some units could also come with side and curtain airbags, depending on the configuration. For a small car, this combination of structure, brakes, and equipment helps explain why it is still remembered with respect among owners.

Simple, but well-built interior

Inside, the Kia Picanto does not try to appear as a luxury car. There are hard plastics, simple controls, and equipment compatible with the time. Even so, the build quality and durability of the seats, buttons, and fittings stand out as strong points after years of use.

The list of items includes electric steering, electric windows on all four doors, electric mirror adjustment, electric folding, air conditioning, radio with CD, MP3, USB, and auxiliary input. The finish is not sophisticated, but it has aged better than many popular competitors.

Small trunk limits family trips

The trunk has 200 liters, sufficient capacity for grocery shopping and urban tasks, but small for trips with family luggage. With the rear seats folded, the volume can reach 870 liters, which improves versatility in specific situations.

Even so, the rear space and trunk reinforce the car’s proposal. The Picanto can carry adult passengers on short trips, but it was not made for long journeys with five people and luggage. It is more intelligent as a second urban car or as a first car for those who live alone or travel lightly loaded.

Parts may cost more, despite good durability

The good quality of components also has a less favorable side: original Kia parts can be more expensive than those of popular national brands. Some items may be compatible with Hyundai models, but this does not always guarantee the same durability or original specification.

Therefore, the purchase requires careful evaluation. Coils, shock absorbers, sensors, transmission condition, oil change history, and trim parts need to be checked before the deal. The robust mechanics help a lot, but do not eliminate the risk of buying a neglected specimen.

Picanto makes sense for those who understand the proposal

The used Kia Picanto is a good option for those who want an automatic, small, economical, and reliable car for the city. It offers light steering, good visibility, ease of parking, and a mechanical set that tends to cause little trouble when well maintained.

But the buyer needs to accept its limitations. The performance is weak, the trunk is small, and the cost of some parts can be surprising. Those who buy expecting an honest urban compact tend to be pleased; those expecting the behavior of a larger car may quickly become frustrated.

The final decision depends on the use. For the city, short commutes, and a light routine, the Picanto delivers a coherent package. For frequent highway use, overtaking, and trips with luggage, the performance limitation weighs in. And you, would you buy a reliable automatic compact knowing it wasn’t made for traveling in a hurry? Leave your opinion in the comments.
