This accessory — whose name refers to the equipment used by divers — raises the air intake point for the engine, usually up to the level of the roof, and has gained space in Brazil in more demanding off-road situations.
According to off-road instructor Luís Carqueijo, it “is a tube that is connected to the air intake system for the engine and raises the height of the air intake point, often almost at the height of the car’s roof.”

In other words, without proper maintenance and correct sealing, the snorkel can do more harm than good.

To ensure the correct function, it is essential to use a snorkel compatible with each vehicle and have it installed by professionals. This avoids leaks and mechanical problems.
According to experts, the snorkel “should not be universal,” as each model requires specific adjustments for pressure and air flow.
And after traversing flooded or dusty areas, it is recommended to check seals, fixations, and possible incrustations to keep the system efficient.
When Is It Worth Installing a Snorkel?
If your vehicle primarily drives on urban streets, the snorkel is not necessary. But for those who tackle flooded terrains, trails, or very dusty environments, this is a valuable accessory.
It provides safety by preventing serious mechanical problems and optimizes engine performance, as long as it is installed and maintained properly.
