Discover What the Snorkel Does in Pickups and SUVs, Its Real Function and Essential Care for Safe and Efficient Installation.
Many owners of pickups and SUVs have already noticed the “tall pipes” coming out of the hood, known as snorkels. This accessory — whose name refers to the equipment used by divers — raises the air intake point for the engine, usually up to the level of the roof, and has gained space in Brazil in more demanding off-road situations.
According to off-road instructor Luís Carqueijo, it “is a tube that is connected to the air intake system for the engine and raises the height of the air intake point, often almost at the height of the car’s roof.”
Real Function of the Snorkel in SUVs and Pickups

In the case of pickups and SUVs used on dirt, mud, and water, the snorkel provides a clear advantage: it improves the engine’s air intake in flooded or dusty conditions.

Hyundai sells an executive minivan that looks like a VIP room on wheels: Custin carries 7 people, uses a 1.5 turbo engine with 168 hp, 8-speed automatic transmission, and costs around R$ 157,000 in direct conversion in Vietnam.
-
The 7-seater Toyota that seems too cheap to exist in Brazil: Rush has a 1.5 engine, manual or automatic option, and a converted price close to R$ 81,000, while here families need to aim for much more expensive SUVs.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Pajero Dakar diesel shows 314,000 km and still draws attention for its reputation for durability; the seven-seater 4×4 SUV handles trails, but signs of severe use may conceal losses for used car buyers.

Peugeot publicly acknowledged the errors of the PureTech engine, which caused serious failures in hundreds of thousands of cars, and introduced the new Turbo 100 as a definitive solution, a 1.2 turbo tested for over 3 million kilometers that replaces the faulty belt with a more durable chain.
Thus, the risk of hydraulic lock — when water enters the engine, potentially causing serious failures — is reduced.
However, its lack of proper sealing or poorly done installation can provide a false sense of security.
As Carqueijo himself warns: despite the elevation of the suction point, “other systems, when exposed to contact with water, can also cause problems, such as electronic and electrical systems and mechanical systems with internal fluids.”
Therefore, just the snorkel does not turn the car into a submarine.
Additional Benefits of the Snorkel
In addition to protection against water, the snorkel also helps to capture cleaner and fresher air, especially useful in dusty environments, which benefits engine performance.
In off-road communities, there are reports of units with pre-filters, which filter fine particles before they enter the engine.
Therefore, the snorkel can extend the lifespan of engine components and maintain a more stable performance in hostile environments.
Snorkel: Aesthetic or Utility?
Although many use it to enhance the rugged look of SUVs and pickups, the snorkel has a real technical function. However, its effectiveness depends on specialized installation and compatibility with the vehicle model.
In other words, without proper maintenance and correct sealing, the snorkel can do more harm than good.
Installation and Necessary Care
To ensure the correct function, it is essential to use a snorkel compatible with each vehicle and have it installed by professionals. This avoids leaks and mechanical problems.
According to experts, the snorkel “should not be universal,” as each model requires specific adjustments for pressure and air flow.
And after traversing flooded or dusty areas, it is recommended to check seals, fixations, and possible incrustations to keep the system efficient.
When Is It Worth Installing a Snorkel?
If your vehicle primarily drives on urban streets, the snorkel is not necessary. But for those who tackle flooded terrains, trails, or very dusty environments, this is a valuable accessory.
It provides safety by preventing serious mechanical problems and optimizes engine performance, as long as it is installed and maintained properly.
