Subsea 7 Hires Butting to Produce Coated Pipes for the Bacalhau Pre-Salt Field Project in the Santos Basin
Subsea 7 hired Butting to produce clad pipes for a project in the Bacalhau Field and in August, the company received a first partial order to supply nearly 6,500 m (21,325 feet) of metallurgically coated pipes (10-inch OD).

Subsea 7 Claims That the Pipes Double the Strength Factor
In October, a second order was placed for about 73 km (45 miles) of mechanically coated BuBi pipes (10-inch OD) and 4,200 m (13,779 feet) of metallurgically coated pipes (14-inch OD). The pipes were ordered in a combination of carbon-manganese steel and corrosion-resistant alloy materials.
According to Subsea 7, the use of clad materials in pipe manufacturing combines the strength and toughness properties of carbon-manganese steels with the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. Located about 185 km (115 miles) off the coast of São Paulo, the Bacalhau oil field is in the pre-salt Santos basin at approximately 2,050 m (6,726 feet) of water.

Bernd Harborth and Berni Reimer, project managers for coated pipes at Subsea 7 for the Pre-Salt, said: “The pipes are subjected to high tensile loads due to the water column of 2,050 m. To withstand these conditions, maximum options for wall thicknesses, dimensional tolerances, and material properties will be utilized during production.”
About the German Company Butting
BUTTING is a family-owned company in its seventh generation that has been growing for 240 years. The foundation for this growth has been built over time by our experienced employees.
In 1777, the first copper smiths began working at BUTTING producing copper boilers for breweries. Since then, there have been many changes: artisanal techniques evolved into computerized technologies, simple equipment transformed into gigantic machines. The know-how of the employees and the preservation of traditional values enable our progress. Today, BUTTING is considered a pioneer in the manufacturing of longitudinal seam pipes and clad pipes, and a reliable partner for companies worldwide.
