New BYD SUV, YangWang U8, Delivers 1,000 Horsepower and Weighs 4 Tons and Still Manages to Float on Water for 30 Minutes.
For some time now, traditional brands like Volkswagen and Ford have highlighted the ability of their vehicles to traverse flooded areas. However, the Chinese BYD seems ready to “humiliate” the entire automotive industry with the launch of its new SUV. Launched in the Chinese market this Wednesday (20), the YangWang U8 is the first electric car that can float on water for up to 30 minutes and still navigate at 3 km/h. Check out all the incredible details of BYD’s new SUV!
BYD Electric Car That Floats on Water Delivers 1,196 Horsepower
The car that floats on water and practically turns into a boat is the YangWang U8. It is a new SUV from BYD’s new luxury brand. The YangWang U8 features all-wheel drive (AWD) with four electric motors and a combined power of an astonishing 880 kW, equivalent to 1,196 horsepower.
BYD’s electric car can spin the tank 360º and float on water in case of emergencies. With a design reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender, yet even bolder, the YoungWang U8 has been launched in two versions and will start being delivered in October.

Another Chinese giant prepares to enter Brazil: BAIC bets on the Arcfox T1, an electric hatchback that promises to compete with the BYD Dolphin, BYD Dolphin Mini, and Geely EX2 with a larger size and a range of up to 425 km.
The price of the two versions of BYD’s SUV (Premium Edition and Off-road Master Edition) is the same, 1.089 million yuan, equivalent to R$ 728,000. BYD has stated that, for now, the YangWang brand will only conduct direct sales to its customers.
The car that floats on water is the most expensive mass-produced vehicle in China. The automaker has not stated whether it plans to import the car to Brazil in the future. Depending on the version, the YangWang U8 can cross flooded areas of 1 meter or 1.4 meters deep. However, if the situation really worsens, the driver can activate the wading mode. In this case, the emergency floating mode is automatically activated if the depth exceeds the limit.
Car That Floats on Water Weighs 4 Tons
According to BYD, in floating mode, the combustion engine will be immediately turned off. The suspension will be raised to maximum, the windows will be closed, the air conditioning will operate with internal circulation, and the sunroof will open to provide an emergency exit for the occupants. According to the website CarNewsChina, the YangWang U8 measures 5.319 m in length, 2.050 m in width, 1.930 m in height, and has a wheelbase of 3.050 m. The vehicle weighs nearly 4 tons (3,985 kg).
The mechanical aspect is very complex. BYD’s SUV is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with extended range. Thus, it has a 2.0 turbo engine solely for powering the 49 kWh Blade battery. In addition to this engine, the impressive BYD SUV features four additional electric motors, each with 220 kW of power. In electric mode, the range is only 180 km, however, with the 75-liter fuel tank, its range reaches 1,000 km. It may be more accurate to call it an unconventional hybrid.
BYD Vehicle Goes from 0 to 100 km/h in Just 3.6 Seconds
Despite weighing 4 tons, with an absurd power of 880 kW (1,196 hp) and torque of 1,280 Nm, its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is accomplished in just 3.6 seconds. That’s faster than a BYD Seal, which goes from 0 to 100 in 3.8 seconds. The top speed of the car that floats on water is 200 km/h. Everything about this vehicle is exaggerated. The YangWang U8 features an incredibly luxurious interior.
