TechnipFMC Closes Over US$ 1 Billion Contract with Shell to Develop Gato do Mato Field in Santos Basin, Expected to Begin Operations in 2029.
The global company TechnipFMC announced a new contract in Brazil, valued at over US$ 1 billion, for the subsea development of the Gato do Mato field. The investment comes after Shell’s investment decision announcement for the Gato do Mato block, located in the Santos Basin in Rio de Janeiro.
The contract, which covers Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation services (iEPCI), is an important step for the exploration and development of the Gato do Mato field, which is situated in depths between 1,750 and 2,050 meters.

This contract represents another significant milestone in this relationship, which has already resulted in various successful deliveries. Jonathan Landes, President of TechnipFMC’s Subsea Unit, commented on the confidence in the relationship with Shell, highlighting the company’s ability to meet Shell’s needs in this new project.
TechnipFMC stated that the use of innovative and efficient technologies for the development of the Gato do Mato field will enable optimized project management and reduce the time required until the first oil production.
According to TechnipFMC, the contract involves the integrated execution of Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation, focusing on efficiency and quality in development.
Shell, as the operator of the Gato do Mato field, aims to accelerate oil and gas production, and TechnipFMC is committed to delivering a complete solution that meets all contract requirements and Shell’s investment.
The company believes that by integrating innovative solutions like Subsea 2.0, it will be possible to improve project management and provide greater predictability in Shell’s schedule for production start-up.
The Field and the Investment Project in Gato do Mato
The Gato do Mato field is a significant gas-condensate discovery in the pre-salt layer, located in the Santos Basin off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
This field involves two adjacent blocks: BM-S-54, acquired through a concession contract in 2005, and the Southern Gato do Mato block, obtained in 2017 through a production-sharing contract.
The consortium responsible for the development of the Gato do Mato field is composed of Shell (with a 50% stake), Ecopetrol (30%), TotalEnergies (20%), and Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA), which is the manager of the production-sharing contract.
The investment in the Gato do Mato field is focused on the installation of a floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO), with a capacity to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day.
The FPSO is expected to come online in 2029, marking a significant advancement in the field’s development and the region’s oil and gas production potential.
TechnipFMC will be responsible for executing several phases of the project, using its integrated engineering solutions to ensure efficiency and the success of the investment.
