Created by Uau Studio, in Como, Italy, Lucia is a compact floating house with 25 square meters, reclaimed wood, birch plywood, electric motor, and a roof that opens by button to expand the view of the lake, the sky, and the surrounding landscape.

The tiny house Lucia was conceived as a floating dwelling for Lake Como, Italy, combining design inspired by the local landscape, reclaimed materials, and a proposal for compact, quiet accommodation integrated with the surroundings.

The project is signed by Uau Studio, a group located in Como, an Italian city known for its architectural richness, historical value, and constant presence as a frequent setting for works of art, films, and series over the decades.

Awarded in different areas of the industry and recognized by Guinness World Records in constructions and installations, the studio developed Lucia as a piece designed to dialogue with the region.

Tiny house inspired by historic boat

At first glance, Lucia resembles a shell resting on the water. The idea, however, comes from another reference: a 15th-century fishing boat depicted in the film “The Betrothed,” based on the work of Alessandro Manzoni.

The visual solution appears as if the boat is turned upside down over a cubic structure. Inside this base, the habitable space is organized to gather essential functions.

The result is a tiny house with a striking appearance, described in the project material as something close to Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks, especially due to the design of the roof and the way it participates in the experience.

Roof opens by button and changes the landscape

One of the central points of Lucia is the modular roof. When closed, the fabric layer wraps around the side of the internal space, creating a more reserved condition for rest and privacy.

At the touch of a button, an electric actuator lifts the sides. With this, the house no longer seems closed and allows a broader view of the lake and the surrounding landscape.

In a larger opening, the roof also releases the view to the sky. The proposal is to allow different uses throughout the day, from a quiet coffee to moments of outdoor contemplation.

Reclaimed wood and 25 square meters interior

The integration with the environment also appears in the choice of materials. The project envisions a manufacturing process aimed at reducing impacts, with reclaimed wood from the nearby landscape and locally sourced and finished products.

Among the mentioned materials is birch plywood, used to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The intention of Uau Studio is to achieve a “harmonious integration” with Lake Como.

Despite the compact area of 25 square meters, the layout includes a bedroom at the bow, dining room, bathroom, full kitchen, and outdoor dining area. The organization resembles solutions in micro-homes, where every meter needs to have a clear function.

Electric motor expands Lucia’s use on the lake

Lucia was not designed just to remain docked. The floating house moves with an electric motor and batteries, a combination described as silent and clean for a leisure setting on Lake Como.

The project also extends beyond the unit itself. Uau Studio envisioned special docks, automatic recharging stations, solar cells, markets, spaces for water sports, and an “edible landscape” formed by plants and fruit trees.

The overall proposal targets a leisure and social space aimed at younger and more modern owners and investors. In this context, Lucia functions both as a design object and as a compact experience on the water.

What do you think of the idea of spending a few days in a tiny floating house like Lucia, with an opening roof, electric motor, and 25 square meters? Comment if this type of project seems comfortable, practical, and truly integrated with the landscape.
