After more than five years of hiatus, the construction of this megaproject in Saudi Arabia has resumed, promising to revolutionize the global architectural landscape.
The Jeddah Tower is designed to be the first man-made structure to exceed the height of one kilometer. This architectural feat will surpass the Burj Khalifa, the current titleholder of the world’s tallest building, by a significant margin of 180 meters. The exact height of the tower, however, remains a closely guarded secret, with speculation suggesting it could reach around 1,600 meters.

Economic and Cultural Impact in Saudi Arabia
The construction of the Jeddah Tower is seen as a crucial step to put the city of Jeddah on the global map, replicating the economic success that the Burj Khalifa brought to Dubai. The tower will house luxury residences, restaurants, offices, a Four Seasons hotel, and the highest observation deck in the world.
Designing the world’s first one-kilometer-tall building is no easy task. American architect Adrian Smith, known for his work on the Burj Khalifa and being part of one of the 7 skyscrapers that changed New York’s urban skyline, as per CasaCor, was chosen for this monumental challenge. The Saudi construction firm Binladin Group was initially contracted for the construction, with a contract worth 1.2 billion dollars.

Resumption of Construction of the Megaproject
The halt in construction in 2017, due to financial and political issues, led to a period of uncertainty. However, the recent resumption of the megaproject indicates a new chapter for the Jeddah Tower, with the search for a new contractor already underway.
The Jeddah Tower is just part of a larger project, the Economic City of Jeddah. This massive complex, with an estimated cost of 20 billion dollars, aims to transform the region into a major tourist, religious, and economic hub.
The resumption of construction of the Jeddah Tower could have a significant impact on the global landscape, especially regarding Dubai, which may lose the title of holder of the world’s tallest building. Additionally, the competition between the two cities could spur a global race to build increasingly taller structures.
The Jeddah Tower is not only a marvel in engineering and architecture but also a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s ambitions and capabilities. Its completion, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, promises to consolidate the country as a global business and cultural leader. It remains to be seen whether this ambitious project will reach its planned heights and what its lasting impacts on the global landscape will be.
