Understand How the Controversy Over an Ad Involving the Former American President Led Donald Trump to Suspend Bilateral Negotiations with Canada
Donald Trump announced on Thursday night (23) that all trade negotiations with Canada are over. He accused the neighboring country of using a “fraudulent advertisement” featuring a supposed video of former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
The message was posted on the Truth Social network, where Trump stated that, “based on flagrant behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are over”. The episode intensified the diplomatic stalemate between Washington and Ottawa, already strained since the beginning of the year due to tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles.
Tariffs and Retaliations That Fueled the Stalemate
Since the beginning of the year, the United States imposed tariffs on Canadian products such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Canada retaliated in kind.

As a result, talks between the two countries had dragged on for weeks. The goal was to revise the trade terms of these sectors.
However, the release of the ad featuring Reagan interrupted the negotiations and reignited bilateral tensions.
The Announcement with Reagan and the Canadian Response
The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, stated on Tuesday (21) that the video produced by his province caught the attention of the White House.
The material featured Ronald Reagan, a Republican, criticizing tariffs on foreign products. He associated these measures with job losses and the risk of trade wars.
Ford declared: “I heard that the president saw the ad. I’m sure he wasn’t very happy.”
Thus, Trump’s reaction was immediate and led to the suspension of talks.
Ronald Reagan Foundation Responds and Questions Use of Image
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation released on Thursday (23) an official statement. It stated that the Ontario government “used selective audio and video” of Reagan without prior authorization.
According to the organization, the material distorts the 1987 Presidential Radio Address. Therefore, legal measures are being assessed.
The Canadian government has, to date, not officially commented on the allegation.
The Tariff Escalation and Economic Concerns
Donald Trump has used tariffs as a political and trade tool on various international fronts. This way, the current trade war has elevated American tariffs to their highest levels since the 1930s.
This situation has raised concerns among businesspeople and economists. Moreover, Trump has already signaled that he may impose new tariffs, should the agreements not progress.
The scenario keeps a climate of uncertainty in the markets.
Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, stated on Thursday (24) that the country will not allow unfair access to its markets. He warned that this will occur if negotiations with Washington fail.
Finally, he emphasized that, in 2026, the United States, Canada, and Mexico should review the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The treaty was signed in 2020 and represents a strategic point in regional economic relations.
