Ukraine Invests in New Unmanned Boats to Strengthen River War and Combat Russian Presence in Strategic Rivers Like the Dnipro.
Ukraine is increasing the use of unmanned surface boats to counter Russian presence in strategic rivers.
Most importantly, a new model called Ursula was launched this month by the Ukrainian company NoviTechNe.
According to the government website United24 Media, the new model is only one meter long and was designed for river operations.

The Ursula stands out for its versatility. The system can perform reconnaissance, act as a floating mine, or transport drones with first-person view.
Additionally, a video from the manufacturer shows the drone maneuvering among riverside vegetation while carrying a small two-kilogram FPV drone.
This configuration allows for quick and discreet attacks, making enemy reactions more difficult.
Other Innovations Already Tested
The Ursula is not the only project. During the winter, the government center Brave1 reported that Ukrainian troops tested the Black Widow 2.
About one meter long, this model can carry up to three kilograms and reach distances of 10 kilometers. Therefore, the country continues to invest in compact and multifunctional systems.
In comparison, river drones are much smaller than conventional USVs, like Magura and Seababy, which measure up to six meters.
This size difference is strategic. Smaller models provide greater agility in narrow channels and shallow waters, where larger vessels would struggle to maneuver.
Advantages in Channels and Rivers
According to researcher Federico Borsari from the Center for European Policy Analysis, Ukraine’s priority is to counter Russian actions in the Dnipro River basin, especially in the Kherson region.
He emphasizes that size is crucial in shallow water systems. Hence, the choice for compact drones favors offensive and defensive missions.
Ukrainian forces can use the boats to launch FPV drones near Russian positions or attack supply boats.
Moreover, the reduced size makes detection more difficult, increasing the chances of success in surprise attacks.
Natural Challenges
The Dnipro River, spanning 981 kilometers across Ukraine, is vital in the war. It serves as a natural defensive line and supply route.
However, operating in rivers presents challenges. Sandbanks, vegetation, and branches hinder navigation.
Another point is that water levels constantly change, making operations unpredictable and requiring constant adjustments.
With these drones, Ukraine seeks to adapt its strategy to the riverine conditions and maintain a technological edge over the enemy.
